🍵 Rooibos Tea 🍵

Unlike most teas, it is not made using leaves from the Camellia sinensis plant. Rather, it is made from the leaves of the South African red bush plant called Aspalathus linearis, and is hence more of a caffeine-free herbal tea.

Its health benefits include:

1. boosts the immune system with its vitamins, minerals, etc
2. loaded with antioxidants and polyphenols that have anti-inflammatory properties
3. helps ease and relax the digestive system

🌿 Barley tea 🌿

Did you know that barley tea is also known as “mugicha” (麦茶) in Japanese or boricha (보리차) in Korean?

So what is barley tea? It is a caffeine-free tea made by steeping roasted barley grains in hot or cold water.

It has a nutty, toasty flavour, somewhat similar in taste to oolong tea.

It is typically brewed in a large batch and kept refrigerated.

To brew a good-tasting cup, use one teabag (or typically 1/4 cup of grains) for two liters of water, hot or cold. Let it steep for a minimum of 10 minutes.

✨ The Tea Plant ✨

Did you know that almost all teas are made from the same plant, camellia sinensis?

What largely determines each tea’s unique colour and strength is a process called oxidation.

The longer tea leaves are oxidized for, the darker and stronger the brewed tea.

For example, black teas are fully oxidized, hence their dark colour and rich flavour. Green teas, on the other hand, are largely unoxidized, hence their lighter colour.

World Biodiversity Day 🌿

The International Day for Biological Diversity, also known as World Biodiversity Day, is celebrated on 22 May 2022. It aims to promote the understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues.

Research indicates that there is a close link between disease outbreaks and the degradation of nature. Today, many of our medicines and foods owe their origin to plants and herbs.

It is crucial that we promote biodiversity conservation to protect plant, animal, microbial and genetic resources for present and future generations.
