Expert Judging Panel chooses vegetarian eel as the best new Dutch food product of 2012.
Product Developer Paul Bom from the Vegetarian Butcher in The Netherlands is the winner of the prestigious Taste Innovation Contest “SmaakNL2012”. Bom makes 100% vegetarian smoked eel salad and captured the hearts and taste buds of the expert judging panel. Bom received the Smaakvol2012 Award for the best new food product in the Netherlands out of the the hands of chef-cook and presenter of the TVprogram "MasterChef” Peter Lute.
Jaap Korteweg, director of the Vegetarian Butcher: "Because we hacked the taste of meat and fish, we are able to liberate more and more animals from the food chain. Why should we kill an animal when we can achieve the same or even better taste with vegetable proteins? We used to use horses in front of carriages, nowadays we have mechanical horsepower under the hood of our cars and combines. From now on we will use mechanics in a way to make slaughter unnecessary and to free animals from all foodchains."
Paul Bom developed the vegetarian eel salad with an authentic craft eel smokery in Urk, based on a soy-based structure named Plenti. The taste panel consisted of Peter Lute, chef cook, owner of restaurant LUTE and presenter of the television program MasterChef, Jeroen Thijssen, writer and journalist at newspaper Trouw and Rene Bink, director of Foodcompany Streekselecties. They chose the vegetarian smoked eel salad during the thrilling final in Castle Groeneveld in Baarn, because it is such a special product, as Peter said, "What you are doing is insanely good, you deserve this award like no other."
The nationwide contest is organized by SmaakvanNL Syntens Innovation for entrepreneurs with the best product innovations from Dutch origin. The nine finalists came from over the whole country and were selected in the regional preliminaries.
