𝐋𝐨𝐤𝐞 𝐒𝐢𝐞𝐰 𝐅𝐨𝐨𝐤 陆小福, 𝟖𝟑 (𝐝. 𝟐𝟖 𝐉𝐮𝐧𝐞 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒)

Loke Siew F**k, a second-generation hawker and the founder of Hong Ji Mian Shi Jia 鸿记面食家 (Block 79 Telok Blangah Drive Food Centre), passed away on 28 June 2024. He was 83

Reportedly, Loke and his father came to Singapore in 1942. Shortly after the war, they became hawkers. The hawker scene then was a vibrant one, marked by rows of stalls selling an endless selection of tasty and affordable local foods along the roadside.

According to the report by the 10-member Hawker Inquiry Commission in September 1950, being a hawker and peddling food in public was a legitimate livelihood and a necessity for the working class population.

However, they continued to be perceived as a “problem”. Hawkers continued to maintain their unhygienic food practices and operate in filthy environments. The presence of secret societies and gangs sometimes also made it impossible for hawkers to earn a decent living.

After Singapore became an independent nation in 1965, concerted government efforts were made to regulate hawkers and the hawking trade.

An estimated 40,000 to 50,000 hawkers were registered. They were prohibited from plying their trade along streets with high traffic volume, in car parks during the daytime, around bus stops, and near schools and other public buildings. Hawkers were relocated to permanent premises.

This was the larger historical milieu in which Loke and his father plied their trade in post-independent Singapore.

For the past thirty years and more, Loke, who was succeeded by his children and grandchildren, has been selling tasty, authentic and “old school” wanton noodles at the food centre at Block 79 Telok Blangah Drive

In May 2024, Loke was diagnosed with end-stage lung cancer. Due to his age, he was deemed to be unsuitable to undergo chemotherapy or surgeries. Loke went home on palliative care and support.

Reportedly, Loke, unfortunately, fell thrice at home, earlier last week (June 24), and he was hospitalised. In the early morning of Wednesday (June 26), doctors informed family members that their family’s patriarch was in critical condition.

However, Loke’s condition stabilised in the intervening hours, and he requested to go home.

On June 28, Loke was able to have dinner with more than 20 members of his family. Thereafter, he died peacefully in his sleep. It was his last family's last reunion dinner.

Loke was known to have many friends, and he particularly enjoyed being amongst joyous company.

We mourn the passing of another pioneer in Singapore’s hawker trade, who had left us with many indelible memories of his tasty and wholesome noodles and char siew and, above all else, his values and humanity.

Rest in peace, Uncle Loke Siew F**k. Goodbye!

Loke’s cremation will take place on Thursday (July 4) at Mandai Crematorium Service Hall 04 at 3.30pm.
