Can Tourists Buy W**d in Thailand?

You can but not like before. Thailand’s cannabis scene has shifted from “easy walk-in shopping” to a medical-only system for cannabis flower. Under the updated rules that took effect 26 June 2025, buds are treated as a controlled herb, and shops are expected to sell only when the customer has a Thai medical prescription or certificate.

Here’s what matters if you’re traveling:

The medical rule doesn’t exclude foreigners. Being a tourist doesn’t automatically block you. If you have a real health concern like nausea, insomnia, appetite issues, chronic pain, migraines, or anxiety symptoms, you can legally access cannabis after a consultation with a licensed Thai medical professional who can issue a prescription.

Thailand didn’t “ban w**d again.” It tightened the system so cannabis flower is linked to medical use and documented access.

𝑰𝒔 𝑪𝒂𝒏𝒏𝒂𝒃𝒊𝒔 𝑰𝒍𝒍𝒆𝒈𝒂𝒍 𝑵𝒐𝒘 𝒊𝒏 𝑻𝒉𝒂𝒊𝒍𝒂𝒏𝒅? (2026 𝑼𝒑𝒅𝒂𝒕𝒆)

No, cannabis is not illegal again in Thailand, but it’s also not a free-for-all anymore. The country has moved from a loose, retail-heavy era to a stricter, medical-focused system.

In June 2022, Thailand removed cannabis flower from the narcotics list, which triggered a massive industry boom. Dispensaries popped up fast in Bangkok, Phuket, Pattaya, Chiang Mai and everywhere in Thailand to the point where people joked it felt like w**d shops were everywhere like 7-Eleven.

During this period, rules existed (age limits, public nuisance rules, product controls), but enforcement was inconsistent, and recreational buying became common in practice.

Starting late June 2025, Thailand’s Ministry of Public Health rolled out tighter controls by classifying cannabis buds/flower as a controlled herb and restricting access to medical use with prescriptions. In simple terms: you generally need a medical certificate/prescription to buy legally, and shops must follow stricter compliance rules.

This is why many people feel like cannabis “became illegal” — but the more accurate truth is: recreational sales are being squeezed, while medical cannabis remains legal under regulation.

Legal Guidelines for 420 Tourists in Bangkok and Beyond 🇹🇭🌿

Thailand is still a popular cannabis destination, but 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐥𝐞𝐠𝐚𝐥 𝐯𝐢𝐛𝐞 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐝 𝐢𝐧 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟓: authorities moved to limit cannabis use to medical purposes and require a prescription to buy cannabis flower.

1) Can tourists buy cannabis in Thailand?

Yes, if you follow the medical-style rules. Recent regulations ban sales of cannabis buds without a prescription, and this applies to both Thais and foreigners.

2) You need a prescription (medical certificate) for cannabis flower

If you want to buy cannabis flower / buds from a licensed dispensary in Bangkok or elsewhere in Thailand, they usually have in-house or partnered doctors to give you a medical prescription so that you can consume cannabis legally.

Purchases are typically limited to no more than a 30-day supply per prescription.

3) Where to smoke

- Public smoking can get you in trouble

Even when cannabis is accessible, public smoking can be treated as a public nuisance and may lead to enforcement actions (fines or complaints).

You can consume in private spaces like your condo, cannabis‑friendly hotels or accommodation, or in properly allowed areas.

4) Age limits + protected groups

Common restrictions include:

- Under 20: not allowed to purchase or use
- Pregnant or breastfeeding: not allowed

These restrictions have been widely stated in all of Thailand’s cannabis controls.

5) Oils, v**es, edibles

Thailand draws a hard line around cannabis extracts:

- Extracts with THC > 0.2% are treated as narcotics.

This can matter for v**e cartridges, concentrates, strong oils, and some infused products.

6) Don’t travel with cannabis across borders

A simple rule for tourists: do not bring cannabis in or out of Thailand. Cross-border cannabis issues can become very serious (even if you bought it legally in Bangkok). Within Thailand, you can carry cannabis if you have your prescription.
