Swallow's Nest Farm & Orchard

Swallow's Nest Farm & Orchard Orchard, Market Garden, Farm Fresh Eggs Swallow's Nest Farm & Orchard is a fledgling family farm started in 2022 after our family recently moved to the St.

Joseph area. We started with the vision of providing our family and the families we touch with healthy, whole food options. We will be constantly expanding our offerings but at this time our little farm is in the very early growing phase. We have lots of ideas and have started the planting phase of our orchard which will take several years to start producing. We also have grown quickly from 6 to 4

0 chickens which are all cage free and organic feeders. We have started to build phase one of the market garden. We are also building out our beehives this year with plans for 4-8 colonies next spring and we can't wait to share honey with you! We are a committed family to growing food that not only blesses our family and friends but also the community in which we live. Currently we are only producing limited quantities of farm fresh eggs at this time as we continue to grow our farm and orchard. All of our chickens are fed organic feed and they are cage free chickens. We think that you will find our eggs to be more rich in nutrients and tastier than those in the grocery store. We are selling them for $4.00 per dozen. Message us for more details. Psalm 84:3 says "Even the Sparrow has found a home and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may have her young - a place near your altar, Lord Almighty, my King and my God." We love the swallows that nest on our property and we love raising our family on our small acreage. We hope that you feel the extra ingredients of home and belonging as you put our little farm's whole foods on your table. Thanks for stopping by we hope you have a blessed day!

Happy World Bee Day!!!

We are so thankful for honey bees and all the pollinators that frequent our farm. They work tirelessly and do so much for us. We all have native pollinators to thank for everything we eat! Without them we are unable to grow any of our foods. Remember that we can all do our part in protecting these precious little creatures by making sure we don't spray them, rehome them when necessary, and allowing native grasses and wildflowers to grow naturally.

Rescuing bees is so much fun and giving them a safe place to live and thrive bring us so much joy. Thanks Mosaic Life Care for allowing me to provide a home for two colonies that were looking for new homes on the campus! Those bees are doing great foraging in the fields of clover, dandelions, and native grasses.

Thanks to all the friends of ours that have referred bee rehoming posts to us - we have been so blessed and actually ran out of hives to put them in this year! We will be busy this winter building more hives for rescuing next year. For now we will focus on our 4 colonies and make sure they are strong and thriving this summer to prepare for the winter ahead.

Here is a video of our busy bees actively making some treatment free, chemical free, raw honey for your families. Stay tuned for posts in the fall about our honey harvest!

It's swarm season and solidly spring – which means both exhilaration and a little bit of exhaustion. This week we planted out our cabbage, broccoli, and cauliflower, transplanted strawberries and mulched onions. We transferred a swarm and caught two more – one cast from our own hive! We listened to the birds sing, watched the bees forage, and admired the potatoes sprouting. Spring is the best!

Before we loved bees in their own right - for the amazing and brilliant creatures that they are, we wanted bees because we loved blueberries. Some our favorite family memories are of picking blueberries in the abundant blueberry farms of MI. When we left MI, we brought along a dream for our own blueberry patch. So really our farm and orchard dreams started with our blueberry dreams. Of course, the natural progression was to look into bees to pollinate these tasty morsels.
This is our test plot of 100 highbush variety blueberry plants, Duke, Jersey, Bluecrop, and Draper. Lord willing, this will look a lot more like a large U-Pick plot in a few years.

The bees had a great first day in their new apiary! They spent the day foraging and doing their figure 8 orienting flights. In 2-7 days, we will plan on transferring the bees into their larger permanent horizontal hive. We will then remove the swarm trap (to be set out to catch more bees) and set their new entrance exactly in the same place. Bees can navigate with remarkable accuracy and find their exact hive entrance even with other colonies close by.

Collected a swarm of bees today to add to the apiary with the help of Dr. Bristow and thanks to Mosaic Life Care for allowing me to rehome these wonderful pollinators.
