The ’s first-ever Food is Medicine Advocacy Day was a success!

Food is medicine—the integration into healthcare of food-based nutritional interventions to manage and prevent disease—can play a critical role in addressing the growing disease burdens, costs, and inequities in diet-related illnesses in our local communities and across the nation.

The event brought together physicians, registered dietitians, retailers, food producers and growers, meal providers, food banks, health insurers, researchers, nonprofit organizations, philanthropists, patients, and more with experience in all facets of .

Approximately 90 attendees from at least 18 states and D.C. educated Congress on the importance of and voiced support for .

It was such an honor to serve alongside this strong collective of voices, gathered to help educate Congress about the power of nourishing food to improve both health and the way that our nation prevents and treats diet-related diseases.

When polar explorer, filmmaker, and mountaineer, Alison Levine, lost her close friend Meg Berté Owen, to complications from cancer, she etched Meg’s name into her ice pick. Eight years earlier Levine led the first American Women’s Everest Expedition, but due to a compromised bid from weather less than 200 feet from the summit, her team had to turn around. This time, in an unwavering resilience and dedication to friendship, in 2010 ‘Team Meg’ was atop Mount Everest. In this, Levine also become one of the few women to ever complete the Adventure Grand Slam (reaching the North Pole and South Pole, as well as climbing the Seven Summits (Everest, Aconcagua, Denali, Kilimanjaro, Elbrus, Vinson, and Puncak Jaya or Kosciuszko)).

After skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosis in women in the United States. October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, and an opportunity for education, increased awareness of this disease, and a call to action- how can tools from lifestyle medicine reduce breast cancer risk?

Only about 5-10% of breast cancers have been shown to be secondary to a known hereditary cause, such as an inherited mutation in BRCA1 or BRCA2. There are a number of other factors that may contribute to increased breast cancer risk, and these include hormonal, lifestyle, and environmental factors.

Research suggests that there are steps women can take to empower themselves, and subsequently lower the risk for development of breast cancer:

1. Prioritize movement throughout your day
2. Maintain a healthy body weight through things like physical activity & nutrition
3. Avoid and/or limit alcohol consumption
