Some news. If you’re a farm stand regular, or were hoping to stop by this summer, please read. ➡️ And if you’re interested in a produce box, let me know!

This was a hard call to make, but it’s the right one for us. Thank you for understanding!

Things are ramping up, inside and out! 💥

For the last couple weeks, I’ve been prepping the back half of the garden for its first real planting in three summers, with the help of my broadfork and a small cultivator. This week, I’m hardening off both seedlings and chicks, and getting ready to integrate my flock. And in about six weeks, we’ll have a few more egg layers around here! Today, I started the last of my seeds (at least until the succession crops roll in 😅).

Some snapshots from a BUSY few weeks, now that the snow is gone!

🌱 Seed starting is a madhouse. I’m so looking forward to getting these guys outside—playing Mother Nature is exhausting (and this isn’t even all of them!)

🐥 Speaking of getting things outside, the buff girlies have graduated to their teenager coop. They’ll stay here for a few weeks, with occasional supervised free-range time alongside the big girls. Later this month, they will go in the regular coop, hopefully with minimal drama (looking at you, Ella).

🔨 Fences, fences, fences. I am so stoked about this new, much nicer looking fence on the garden! And the old snow fencing now gives the hens some boundaries when free-ranging (I made sure to include their favorite trees, though 🖤).

Other than that, we’ve been soaking in rare quiet moments whenever we can.

Fellow chicken keepers: FREE to a good home!

We’ve found ourselves with a sweet little guy in this new batch of chicks. He’s about eight weeks old and we can’t keep him. For anyone who’s looking for a flock protector, I’m willing to drive as far north as Mackinaw City, as far south as Grayling.

Please let me know if interested, and spread the word if not!

Take the wins when can because this is HUGE. As of today the pesticide liability shield that was placed in the farm bill has been dropped!!!

If this would have passed, not a single person could sue Bayer or the like for the harmful effects caused by glyphosate and other sprays.

Almost one month in with the buffs. It’s amazing how fast they grow!

Big-kid feathers are mostly in, with just a little bit of baby fluff left, and we’re weaning off the heat lamp so they’ll be able to go outside soon. Then comes the fun of flock integration. 😅

For now, though, they’re duking it out over carrot tops.

Chicken litter + water, air, and time = A great soil additive! 🐓

A key tenet of composting is balancing nitrogen-rich “green” material with carbon-rich “brown” material and, in a chicken coop, this biological magic happens all on its own. Their coop needs regular clean outs anyway, so instead of pitching this material, it goes into the garden to age and support the next round of crops. This also means we don’t need to use chemical fertilizers on the food we grow, eat, and sell.

And here’s what I think is the coolest part: the chickens will get scraps from the carrots we use, completing a tidy little self-contained cycle!

Chickens, compost, carrots: the circle of life. 🌀

After mentioning that I’ll be at the Wolverine Farmers & Makers Market this year, I’ve gotten some questions about whether I’ll still have the farm stand out this summer.

The answer is a resounding YES! In fact, I’m considering having it out on a weekday evening, in addition to the usual Sunday hours this summer. That part will depend on the garden and the chickens, but regardless: you can count on fresh eggs, veggies, and herbal goodness just about every Sunday this season.

If the weather cooperates, we’ll kick off Memorial Day weekend, with salves, eggs, greens, and seedlings. Just six short weeks away! 💐👩🏼‍🌾🍅
