“At a time when New Yorkers are already feeling the pressure of rising costs, the focus should be on solutions that improve efficiency, accuracy and transparency - not banning tools that help stores display prices more reliably.”

Thanks to the brothers’ successful business endeavors, the Hannaford farm outgrew its original location. Albert and Mary moved to a larger property at the corner of Two Lights Road and Hannaford Cove Road in Cape Elizabeth. The house still stands today.

The Farm:
The Hannaford Bros. story began in Cape Elizabeth, Maine, on a humble homestead and several acres of farmland owned by the family since the early 19th century. In 1860, Albert and Mary Hannaford purchased the farm and adjacent fields from a relative for $400. Home to Albert, Mary, and their ten children, this Cape-style farmhouse was located on the present-day Pond Cove IGA on Ocean House Road in Cape Elizabeth.

For Stop & Shop, Marty is more than just an in-store tech solution alerting workers to spills and out-of-stocks. The tall, gray, googly-eyed robot has become an unofficial mascot of sorts and a generator of positive press coverage for the Ahold Delhaize chain.

The Stop & Shop School Food Pantry Program was established to help limit barriers impacting students’ ability to succeed in the classroom by making sure that they have consistent access to food. Stop & Shop supports local schools’ existing food pantries or helps them establish new ones by providing donations to help stock their shelves.

Stop & Shop’s “Marty the Robot” also visited the students and even donated $5,000, or 50,000 meals.

Across New York City, there are 48 total school pantries, 15 in Queens, 13 in the Bronx, 14 in Brooklyn, 4 in Staten Island, 2 in Manhattan, and several more to open across the boroughs in 2025.
