As we are in the spirit now of planting seeds, here is one collection of harvested seeds for planting that look nothing like what you might expect. They are carrot seeds but may resemble little spiders, in my opinion. You can purchase such seeds at the market.

A quick way to sprout seeds is to use the paper towel method. Moisten a paper towel, place several seeds inside it (we used raw peanuts), seal the paper towel in a plastic bag, place the bag away from light, and identify on the bag what you sprouted and when. The figure on the left shows the outside setup after 4 days, which is today 3/17. The right figure shows the opened bag with the sprouted seeds ready for planting.

One of our vendors has found this snail seed starting method quite useful and prolific. The pic on the left is a view from the top after the seeds have been planted in the recommended medium, for example, by rolling potting mix inside a strip of bubble wrap to create a coil. The upper right pic is a view of this coil from the side. And the bottom right pic shows what happens quickly after planting. Look up this method in your favorite search engine.

On October 11, the South Valley Growers' Market will move from the South Lot of the Gutierrez-Hubbell Open Space to the center field of the property to be a part of the Bernalillo County Fall Farm Festival. Here's the ad for the festival. Visitors to the festival will park in the South Lot, which is on the corner of Isleta and Hubbell Circle, and then follow signs to the festival. JOIN US THERE.

I think the only commercial places to buy lemon cucumbers are farmers' markets. These ones are from a fall garden, and I hear there are many more blossoms ready to spew forth where these came from. These are really mild cucumbers.

Greens, like collards and kale and spinach, make striking photos from the top. Kind of surrealistic.

Start thinking about becoming a vendor in our market next year. Plant your garlic in the fall, like right now. I just bought these at the market last Saturday. I would say that garlic doesn't look quite real, but taste it and you'll know otherwise.
