Southwestern Pennsylvania has spent decades waiting for the next big employer to arrive. A new analysis suggests a different economy has been building here for some time.

Twenty-one community-led projects across Allegheny and Beaver Counties are projected to generate $845 million in Gross Regional Product and 6,640 job-years over the next two decades. Those are numbers we normally see in a megadeal press release. The difference is that this work is already here, it is likely to stay here, and the returns accrue to the communities that initiated and sustain it.

It also costs far less. The cost to create a job in the Active Economy has been calculated at $162,000. By comparison, corporate megaprojects create jobs at an average cost of $648,000 — public money spent chasing employers who are free to leave. And the ledger doesn't stop there.

All these findings and more are outlined in The Active Economy Report, commissioned by RiverWise & New Sun Rising and funded by the Just Transition Fund. The underlying research for the report was completed by the University Center for Social and Urban Research at the University of Pittsburgh, which found that this economic growth is amplified by an additional $123 million of Social Return on Investment (SROI) over 20 years.

Happy Labor Day from the Aliquippa Food Co-op! 🛒🌱

Today, we celebrate the workers, builders, caregivers, entrepreneurs, and community members whose time and effort keep our communities moving forward.

Labor Day is a reminder that people are at the heart of a strong economy. That same belief is at the heart of the cooperative model.

A food co-op is more than a place to buy groceries. It creates opportunities for local jobs, small businesses, local producers, and community members to have a voice and a stake in something they help build.

When we work together, invest together, and make decisions together, we create a stronger and more connected community.

🎶🎨❤️🖤🎉🎉 Celebrating Community, Creativity & Cooperation!

On behalf of the Aliquippa Food Co-op, we want to extend a heartfelt thank you to Cheryl King, her incredible team, and the Franklin Center of Beaver County for hosting another wonderful Aliquippa Art & Music Festival!

For three decades, this event has brought together artists, musicians, entrepreneurs, families, and community members to celebrate the creativity and spirit that make Aliquippa special. This year's festival was another great reminder of what can happen when people come together with a shared commitment to community.

We were especially excited to see the entrepreneurial spirit thriving and engaging among the vendors. From local artistsans and food makers to small businesses and community organizations, the festival created a platform and atmosphere for people to showcase their talents/products/services to connect with customers, and support one another.

For us at the Aliquippa Food Co-op, this is a powerful example of cooperation in action. Community doesn't grow through one organization working alone—it grows when organizations, businesses, residents, and entrepreneurs work together, create opportunities for one another, and invest in the place we call home.

👏🏾 Thank you to everyone who helped make this longstanding Aliquippa tradition possible and to everyone who came out to support it.

This black-led co-op in the 1940s and 50s paved the way for our co-op, The Aliquippa Food Coop.
