Lemon is a small evergreen fruit tree up to 5-8 m high, with a spreading or pyramidal crown. There are trees aged 45 years.

The bark is grayish, slightly fissured on perennial branches and green or reddish-violet, smooth on annual shoots, usually with thorns, less often without them.

Leaves with the scent of lemon, leathery, green, 10–15 cm long, 5–8 cm wide, glossy, glossy on the upper side and light green and matte on the lower side, entire edges, with venation, dotted when viewed in the light (from translucent containers essential oil), broadly oval or oblong-ovate, pointed at both ends, on short (from 1 to 1.8 cm), wingless or winged (on growth shoots) petioles, with a noticeable articulation at the base of the leaf blade, usually falling off every 3 of the year.

The birthplace of cultivated lime is the Malacca Peninsula. For the first time, commercial lime culture arose in the 70s of the XIX century on the island of Montserrat (from the Lesser Antilles).

Millions of lime trees are cultivated in India, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Myanmar, Brazil, Venezuela, and West African countries. Lime comes to the international market mainly from Mexico, Egypt, India, Cuba and the Antilles.

Lime is usually cultivated in tropical zones up to 1000 m above sea level. Many experts consider lime undemanding to soil conditions, it can grow on poor sandy and stony soils. However, lime is more sensitive than most citrus crops to adverse soil and climatic conditions. The best soils are light loams with a deep arable horizon and good drainage.

Lime occupies one of the last places in terms of resistance to low temperatures, it is damaged at minus 1–2 °С, it is well adapted to the conditions of a humid tropical climate, in which lemon does not bear fruit well, therefore, in the tropics, lime is the main "sour citrus".

Real lime (lat. Citrus aurantiifolia), Citrus aurantifolia. Also used names: Key lime, sour lime, Mexican lime - a species of plants of the genus Citrus (Citrus) of the Rutaceae family, originating from India.

The name comes from the Persian. لیمو‎ (limu - “lemon”).

It entered the Mediterranean in the second half of the 1st millennium AD. e.
broadleaf lime
Broadleaf lime (Citrus latifolia (Tanaka ex Yu.Tanaka) Tanaka), or Persian lime. Its fruits resemble a lemon, they are large (6-8 cm in diameter), with a thin (1.5 mm) smooth peel. The aroma is weaker than that of real lime. Usually seedless, the composition of the fruit is similar to the real lime. Presumably a hybrid species (cultigen) of sour lime and lemon.
Lime sweet
