One of those market moments that doesn’t need an explanation, but we’re going to give you one anyways: peaches are here! SC clingstone varieties are making their appearance along the rows of the truck shed stalls and on the shelves of our Market Shops vendors. If you’re wondering if they’re ripe, the proof is in the peach. June Gold and Flavor Rich yellow peaches are big, exceptionally juicy, and heavy with flavor. The work you put in for a clingstone over the later freestone varieties is rewarded in dense, peachy flavor and stronger natural sweetness!

Alongside SC clingstones are some other early summer favorites: Grainger county tomatoes (the perfect canning round), blackberries, blueberries, plums, and FL watermelons from yellow to deep-skinned, neon-fleshed, ultra-sweet Sugar Baby varieties. Swing by this weekend to get your first taste of peak season from a farmer.

The long week of rain we just had in WNC was a hard but necessary weather—while our thoughts are with our farmers along the Mills River and our neighbors in Gerton, Broad River, and Bat Cave, we also know that long rain after the drought and heat will likely mean a swift end to strawberry season. These tender berries will soon be scarce, so now is a good time to come by the market to secure a basket or two.

Ashley English of Small Measure shares with us her tips for keeping strawberries from going south too soon. As she says, the enemies of strawberries are moisture, bruising, mold, and heat. Keep berries cool and dry by storing in a shallow, sealable dish (spread in as few layers as possible to prevent them from bruising under their own weight) in the back of the fridge, and wait to wash until you’re ready to use them immediately and these delicate seasonal favorites can last up to ten days in the fridge!

We are looking back at last weekend’s Nursery Crop Commodity Day, thankful to all of our neighbors and community members here in WNC that came out to support local growers and FFAs. While we show up for one another, we are also called to remember those fallen veterans who gave their lives, allowing us to come together to celebrate the coming of another summer.

Thank you to all who came out to support local for Nursery Crop Day, thank you to veterans both living and lost, and we hope you had a meaningful Memorial Day, WNC.
