This season, the first serious candidate for “Biggest Pawpaw of 2026” was a 1 pound 1.3 ounces Chappell pawpaw that was harvested the first week of the season. After just a 2 day reign, it was dethroned by two other Chappells. One weighed in at 1 pound 2 ounces and another at 1 pound 3 ounces.

Eight days later, a Tallahatchie tied but did not beat the season record tipping the scale at 1 pound 3 ounces. Two days after that, a pair of Susquehannas made a run for the crown but fell just short with each weighing in at 1 pound 2.2 ounces.

Yesterday, a hefty Potomac finally took over the crown, weighing in at 1 pound 5.4 ounces. With pawpaw season quickly winding down here in Atlanta, the Potomac may have a shot at keeping this title. But I do see some Susquennas still on the tree that could be serious contenders!

One of our customers, Marshall, thoroughly enjoyed being introduced to the wonderful world of pawpaws through our Cantaloupe, Shenandoah, Tallahatchie, Wabash, and Chappell premium varieties. However, he lamented that he has been searching for pawpaws in the woods and has never seen them. So I offered to take him foraging near his home.

Marshall was thrilled to see pawpaws in the wild for the first time and even got to taste a few. I walked him through the subtle phases of the tasting experience. Upon the initial bite, he was immediately hit with that unmistakable tropical sweetness. Once the sweetness dissipated, he then experienced the slightly bitter aftertaste often found in wild pawpaws.

Regardless, Marshall was happy to take a handful home for his wife to try. Before he left, we placed one of the foraged pawpaws next to a Susquehanna pawpaw from today’s harvest. We laughed at the enormous difference between the two!

Now he completely understands why we call ours “premium pawpaws”.

Today’s harvest brought our biggest pawpaw of the season so far!

This Chappell beauty weighed in at 1 pound, 1.3 ounces. It’ll be going to a lucky customer along with a Rappahannock, Tallahatchie, and Shenandoah.

We often get asked how big our pawpaws get. The honest answer? It depends…

Our premium varieties have been selected for size and can get impressively large, but there’s still a lot of natural variation, both between varieties and even among fruits from the same tree.

Last year our smallest fruit was just 1 ounce. On the other end, our largest (also a Chappell) hit 24 ounces (1½ pounds).

Is 1½ pounds the upper limit? We used to think so since that’s where most past contest winners landed. Then last year the Largest Pawpaw winner at the Ohio Pawpaw Festival completely blew that out of the water with a record-breaking 2.55-pound monster. Our premium pawpaws are starting to trickle in. As harvest picks up, we will be reaching out to the next lucky customer on the waiting list to arrange for pickup.

These Shenandoahs will be giving someone their very first introduction to the wonderful world of pawpaws!

Atlanta’s rarest fruit is almost here… and the waitlist just opened.

Most of the country waits until September for pawpaws. National Pawpaw Day is the third Thursday of September and the Ohio Pawpaw Festival extends the celebration into the weekend. These main events have everyone convinced that September is peak pawpaw season.

Not in Atlanta.

Our warmer climate means these fleeting, tropical-tasting fruits start ripening in late July and early August… and the entire season is over by late August. A handful of weeks. That’s it.

We’ve been growing the absolute best tree-ripened pawpaws locally for years, the ones with the richest flavor, silkiest texture, and purest tropical notes. These aren’t the average pawpaws you might find in the wild once in a blue moon. These are the ones people drive hours for and still miss because they sell out every single year.
