Beeswax is used to make comb in the hive where the queen lays eggs and also where honey and pollen are stored, but wax production comes only from young bees between 12 to 20 days old. Wax glands atrophy after about 17–20 days before the bee transitions into it's foraging role. Those young bees consume approximately 9lbs of honey to make 1lb of beeswax, so when a colony moves into a new home where they have to build new comb, they will expend their energy producing wax and that will reduce the amount of excess honey they'll be able to store. This is why we tell new beekeepers not to expect to harvest honey the first year.

“Honeybee making delicate wax flakes.
It takes around 12 hours for a single bee to produce just 8 tiny flakes of wax.
These small, translucent scales are carefully formed and used to build the intricate honeycomb structure.
Astonishingly, it requires nearly 500,000 wax scales to produce just 1 pound of beeswax.
This incredible process highlights the patience, precision, and teamwork of honeybees—
one of nature’s most hardworking and fascinating creators.”

Besides pesticides, honey bees face parasitic mite infestations, and reduced forage availability which reduces each hives ability to produce a sustainable honey crop. Honey bee survival in the wild is now rare without apiary management. and that work has become increasingly complex and difficult. Please support your local beekeepers and the Southeastern Indiana Beekeepers Association.

Did you know that honey bees have different jobs throughout their lives? See this short video. How do they know what job to do and when? That's how God designed them, but they also have brains and are not just atomotrons following their programming. They were designed to serve the colony and to put it's well-being above their own individual well-being, so older bees will revert back to earlier jobs if that is what the colony needs!

Every honeybee has a job to do. Some are nurses who take care of the brood; some are janitors who clean the hive; others are foragers who gather pollen to ma...

We introduced our new raw HOT honey on Saturday and people loved it! The labels we bought don't work well, but we're getting them fixed. We have some of the hot honey batch left for this Saturday, but still with the bad labels. The labels are not wrong, they are correct, but just dark and hard to read. Thanks all for your support!!!

We'll have freshly harvested raw honey at the market tomorrow, and a new item HOT Honey!!!

The market actually begins a week before this. Hope to see everyone there! The bees have been very busy making honey and I hope to have some ready for harvest by then!
