If you happened to see WLKY's story about beef prices yesterday, you may have seen a familiar face to us at Boone's.

That's Nathan Lawson of Lawson Farms and Big Springs Beef, and we thought we'd tell you a little more about the farmer behind the interview.

Nathan and his family farm just down the road from us in Bloomfield. He raises cattle, corn and soybeans alongside his wife, kids and parents. This isn't a big corporate operation. It's a family farm, with multiple generations working together to make a living from the land and raise food for other families. And Nathan is one of those people who truly loves what he does. He knows his cattle. He cares about their health and welfare. He cares about the land he farms. And he thinks about the future of his herd, not just what he can sell today.

That's especially important right now. With cattle prices where they are, Nathan could sell more of his heifers and take advantage of today's market. Instead, he's holding heifers back to help keep his herd strong and make sure he has cattle to supply his customers in the years ahead.

Today we're under a heat advisory, with a high around 96 degrees and a heat index near 100. Nathan will still be out there checking cattle, making sure they have water and watching to make sure none of them are in distress.

Farmers plant corn and soybeans and pray for rain when the crops need it. They watch mama cows and pray for healthy calves. They worry about weather, feed costs, fuel costs and markets they have absolutely no control over. And then they get up the next morning and do it all again. Rain or shine, sleet or snow, oppressive heat or extreme cold, they get up, go outside, and work the land and livestock.

We need people like Nathan to keep loving the land, loving their animals and loving this way of life enough to keep doing it. Our food supply depends on families who are willing to do this work, generation after generation.

We're proud to work with Nathan and proud to have beef from local producers like Lawson Farms come through Boone's.

If you'd like to support Nathan and his family, give Lawson Farms selling Big Springs Beef a follow. And if you're looking to buy beef directly from a local farmer, keep them in mind when they have beef available. Or give us a call and we can direct you to a producer we work with near you.

Mostly, we just hope you'll take a minute today to appreciate Nathan and all of the farmers like him who are out there doing the work.

We pray for rain when their crops need it. We pray for healthy calves and healthy herds. And we pray that good farmers continue to love this life enough to keep doing it.

We're incredibly thankful this one does.

Real talk y'all! We've gotten quite a few calls about the recent announcement that the U.S. is temporarily increasing imports of beef trim. We understand the concern, but we don't want anyone to panic about the beef they're buying at Boone's.

First and foremost, we support American farmers and ranchers. Our business has depended on the livestock producers who have fed this country for generations, and this announcement doesn't change that commitment.

Second, this announcement does not change how we source our beef. We aren't switching suppliers or changing our products because of this program.

The U.S. cattle herd has been at historically low levels for several years, which is one of the reasons beef prices have remained high. But we aren't running out of beef, and importing beef isn't new.
What's changing is that the U.S. will temporarily allow up to 300,000 additional metric tons of lean beef trim to enter the country over a 90-day period. The administration estimates this represents roughly a 10% increase over current projections. Importing lean beef trim for ground beef isn't new. The U.S. has relied on imported lean trim for years to supplement our domestic beef supply and blend with the fattier trim produced here. What's changing is the amount we're allowing in, not the basic way ground beef is supplied in this country.

We know the words “beef shortage” can bring back memories of empty meat cases during COVID. That's not what's happening here. This is an effort to add more beef to an already functioning supply chain, not a response to grocery stores running out of ground beef.

At Boone's, some of our beef comes from cattle harvested right here in our USDA-inspected facility. We also purchase beef from a small number of established US suppliers because we can't harvest enough cattle ourselves to keep our retail cases full and our prices competitive.

We think you should ask questions about where your food comes from, and we're always happy to answer them. But we also don't want a big headline to create unnecessary worry. In the overall U.S. beef supply, this is a relatively small change. It doesn't change what we're doing at Boone's.

We'll continue working to bring you fresh, safe, wholesome meat at the best prices we can.
