McCary Meats
It takes resilience, and wiliness to work hard to weather a company through 50 years and that is just what the McCarys had in stock when they decided to open McCary Meats in Basin City in 1968. They just finished building the hardware store; there was a grain storage facility a grocery store and about 10 houses. “We actually lived in Othello while the butcher shop was being built, Rick said, “I remember moving from Oregon where there were a lot of trees and coming here where there weren’t any. As a young kid, I wondered why we were coming here”.
Bud and Marlene worked tirelessly growing the business for many years. Bud McCary built the butcher shop on having good quality meat for the people, making sausage and smoking meat using recipes that could be trusted. As the business grew, he was able to build a slaughterhouse, about a half mile away at the southern entrance to the town on Glade North Road in 1976. Ten years ago, Rick and his wife came to Basin City to help his parents run the business, and about six years ago Bud and Marlene retired to the Tri-Cities to enjoy some well-deserved traveling and free time! At that time, they had sold the business to another group for a short time, however, Rick and DeAnna have since repurchased the business and are looking to bring back the traditional butchery practices McCary Meats always had with just a touch of modernism.
Rick and DeAnna have fallen into their respective roles in the business and make a pretty good team as each of them bring something to the table. Rick has a vast knowledge of the industry working under his Dad for many years and being trained outside in retail cutting as well. Although DeAnna has an education in Nursing, she also has many years in Customer Service and education in Business Administration, so she is putting that work here in the retail shop. She has really enjoyed getting to know the people here. They both are enjoying working the with the community and getting involved with the many programs and community outreach services there are.
