Nothing like spotting a swarm in the apiary on the way out for golf! 🐝⛳️

No time to suit up, so I just pulled my hood tight and hoped for the best. Swarms are usually pretty gentle, but I still don’t enjoy having bees get stuck in my hair!

(Sorry tree- I don’t know my own strength)

Happy World Bee Day!

Opie and his new baby brother would like to remind you to leave the dandelions for the bees! They are among the first plants to bloom in the spring, providing a valuable food source for pollinators. They offer both nectar and pollen, which are essential for pollinators' survival and reproduction.

(We still can’t agree on a name for this little pipsqueak of a pup! Any suggestions??)

P**p. So. Much. P**p. 💩🐝

Bees are many things—but they are not messy roommates. They absolutely refuse to relieve themselves inside the hive. All winter long they hold it in while clustered tight for warmth. When temps creep up to about 40°F, they seize the moment, break cluster, and take a long-overdue cleansing flight.

And they don’t waste the warm-up. While they’re out stretching their wings, they haul out the winter casualties too. Bathroom break and housekeeping—efficient little ladies.

A wet bee is a dead bee. 🐝❄️💀

Bees naturally kick their dead out of the hive, so some body-stacking is normal. Winter makes this a bigger problem—snow blocks the entrance, dead bees pile up, airflow stops, moisture builds, and the hive dies.
Upper entrances act as emergency exits, while upper vents help keep air moving. Beekeepers can help by clearing snow and dead bees from the main entrance to restore maximum airflow and keep the hive dry. Cold doesn’t kill bees, but moisture does.
