I am warmed by the posts of concern and love for the Bath Farmers’ Market. The Bath Farmers’ Market board’s decision to cancel the 2024 market was not an easy one, and as with other difficult decisions, there were several factors.
Last year’s market manager resigned unexpectedly in February due to family health concerns. We searched for a new manager, ran ads in the paper and hired a new one. Next came meetings to transfer passwords, email lists and planning events. Previous vendors, as well as new ones, were invited to join the market. In spite of the former manager being advised by the borough office last year not to run the market in 2024 because of road construction, we were determined to have the market. An article was run in the paper encouraging all businesses, churches, and community groups to be part of the market. A sign-up open house was held to answer questions and help vendors fill out paperwork. One local business came.
A week before opening day we had paperwork from two vendors: one local business (free to set up) and one half-season vendor ($125). The vendor money goes part to the borough for transient fees and the rest pays the market manager. I and one other board member have overseen the market for 17 years for no pay (we started with 4 board members). We felt we had no choice but to close the market.
I would welcome an open public meeting as soon as possible (as I think Mayor Fi suggested) to discuss, brainstorm, and to go into more detail. I would love for the market to continue!
Sincerely, Carol Bear, BFM board member
