Through Southern University Ag Center and other 1890 land grant institutions the IFASF project introduced entrepreneurial, management, and organizational skills necessary to access post-production markets, including marketing added-value goat meat products. The long-term goal was and still is to increase the portion of the food dollar received by limited resource farmers. Research proved the pop

ularity towards goat meat and goat value-added products was increasing by leaps and bounds

Through this project, we wanted to create an opportunity for small producers to access a higher profit through vertical integration into multiple segments of the market-chain. This was achieved through producer education specific to goat production, product development, capital access (financing and credit), business management skills and marketing. In October 2006, a regional steering committee was initiated, and through that a goat coop was formed and named. Southeastern Goat Cooperative of Louisiana also known as Louisiana Goat Coop.

Overall General Objective: Ensure that small producers are empowered and equipped to compete in the meat goat industry. Develop educational delivery systems addressing federal and state regulations related issues. Assist in the development and/or enhancement of cooperatives (regional) for the production, processing and marketing of goat and value-added products.
