Merritt Farm is growing! We have some new feathered friends taking up residence in the chicken yard offering soft peeps and trills throughout the daylight hours. The Farmer’s Wife has been raising chickens for many years now. Not only do I love keeping them for their fresh, delicious eggs but I also enjoy learning about the different breeds and varieties. I am fascinated by their many colors and feather patterns. One of the best sounds on the farm is the happy cackling of my hens as they sing in joyful chorus as the day begins or in celebration of laying the egg.

I just came in from time in the garden. Not working, mind you… more of enjoying the general splendor. Raspberries are in season on the farm. I ate them as I meandered barefoot along the garden paths. I take a berry basket with me but it seems my basket doesn’t remain full long enough to make it to the farmhouse sink. Raspberries are my one weakness. I am in good company however. Louise also appreciates the sweet gifts from the garden.

There is something in the air of early summer that arouses patriotic feelings at Merritt farm.
The farmhouse is often decked inside and out with americana flair this time of year. Who doesn’t love some red, white and blue? A recent weekend project found the Farmer’s Wife adorning the fence posts with American flags along the highway frontage of the farm. Seeing Old Glory, even in miniature form, always brings a smile to the face and a swelling of the heart. The meaning of the colors of Old Glory ring true to this day - red symbolizes bravery and valor, white for purity and innocence and the blue represents vigilance, perseverance and justice. We are so very grateful for our freedom, hard won. And may we always see the sacrifice of so many who gave everything to protect it.

Spring brings a plethora of activity on the farm. Expanding the apiary is one of the high priority projects for the Farmer’s Wife in 2023. We added 4 new hives in late May as well as relocated our bees to a permaculture field. The brood boxes and supers are dispersed throughout a native wildflower buffer adjacent to the creek that winds through our farm to give the bees better access to pollen, nectar and water. The new location is also more convenient for beekeeping activities and bee watching. Honey bees are fascinating! Just the fact that honey bees can fly 3 miles to collect nectar and return home again to their hive without getting lost is amazing. More unbelievable is the fact that the location of the nectar was communicated to that bee by a waggle dance performed inside a pitch black hive, detected by the foragers antenna, and then translated to an exact distance and direction. The secrets of these busy pollinators are enchanting and the fruit of their labor inspire my best efforts in beekeeping!

The last few weeks of winter can be the hardest to bear. Spring is tantalizingly near, yet still far away. Oh the days of anticipation as the days slowly grow longer! The Farmer’s Wife is yearning for warmer temperatures. Every walk on the farm my eyes are peeled and ears are tuned for signs of Mistress Spring’s arrival - hints of buds and flowers… the songbirds and peepers lifting their voices in song. I am looking and listening. Watching and waiting. Under the boughs of the cedar, Robin Redbreast has been chirping as happily as can be. When the robins are out it’s only a matter of time. Our flock of feathered ladies have heralded the imminent arrival of fair weather in the most delicious of ways: a surplus of beautiful fresh eggs in the nest boxes every day. A welcome change from the slower productivity and provision in the colder months. Even so, patiently I wait for the new season that promises change and renewal. Hurry spring!

When honey is collected from the hives at Merritt Farm, we fill our jars with the sweet, amber goodness. Then we are left with a quantity of wax… Do we toss the leftover beeswax in the garbage? Oh heavens no! We save it and render it. Beeswax is one of the most useful ingredients to have on hand when you want to make your own household goods and homemade bath products. The bees work hard, and respecting the work of these pollinators and honey makers means using all the hive products and putting them to good use in the farmhouse. Since the Farmer’s Wife is a novice at beekeeping there was much trepidation of how to make the gooey wax cappings and combs useful. With a bit of reading, collecting supplies and a sense of adventure the task was finally undertaken. Last week a small batch of beeswax from the autumn honey harvest was rendered for candle making. Notice the color difference between beeswax collected from different hives. So fascinating! What a precious gift representing a marriage of effort between the bee and the beekeeper.

In ancient Egypt, chamomile was considered a gift from the divine used for offerings to the sun god Ra and as decorations on King Tut’s sandals. The oil from the plant was even used to anoint the dead including the body of Ramses II! The Farmer’s Wife recently spent a few hours in the grow house up-planting seedlings for the spring garden. On the farm, chamomile is grown for its simple beauty and a myriad of beneficial uses - most importantly teas, baths and as a pollinator for the honey bees!
