We do NOT have roses this weekend, but we DO have gorgeous chicories so you can make your friends and lovers a beautiful salad. Romance!

🥗Finely chop a few anchovy fillets and add to a large bowl. Finely grate a garlic clove or two and add to the anchovies along with a good spoonful of grainy mustard. Add some nice sherry vinegar or fresh lemon juice and season with salt and pepper. Tear the leaves with your hands and add to the bowl and toss toss toss. Finish with some olive oil, more salt and pepper. Very good with a roast chicken or perhaps a steak (we have both!). ❄️🌹❄️

❄️In the 2.5 years we’ve been open we’ve only closed for bad weather once— until tomorrow. We will be CLOSED tomorrow, Sunday the 8th, because the roads are a mess and it’s simply too cold to be outside.

Other things you can do tomorrow instead of coming to First Bloom: Make a pot of brothy beans with garlic and lemon. Reorganize your bathroom cabinets. Braise some meat with lots of vinegar and onions. Call someone you love and gab. Write a letter?! Assemble a very large baked pasta and eat most of it for dinner. Watch the Olympics (or the Super Bowl?). Take a bottle of red wine you’re not sure is good or not and turn it into mulled wine. Stay cozy and see you Wednesday❄️

Dear Mom and Dad,

Winter break was awesome. I got my shelves cleaned and reorganized, plus, restocked all your favorite items. Even though it’s the middle of winter, we have some nice produce, including some excellent purple sweet potatoes. We also got a new shoppable freezer full of local pork and chicken and lamb, and soon we’ll have seafood. It’s all very exciting. We reopen Wednesday 2/4 and are open 10-5. Come visit soon?

Love, First Bloom

Yes, it’s true: our New York City pop-is staying open till 12/23 🎀 Sure, you could buy shallots just about anywhere, but what if you bought the best ones from while picking up a jar of Very Good Tomato Sauce and perhaps a bouquet of flowers from or a festive petite Christmas wreath (with a bow) or a few excellent candles and also some bags of fun shaped pasta and the most delicious anchovies you’ve ever had? Dreams so come true at 61 Hester Street. See you soon 🎁 Art by our very best .hartung

This weekend and every day at our little New York City pop-up, we’ve got so much shopping and also a perfect little café next door. Ham and butter on baguette with pickled peppers, our famous (to us) buttermilk biscuits with blueberry jam, brothy beans and greens, soup and salad (!!), radishes and preserved lemon butter with living seedy bread, the best cured meats you’ll ever have from the pride of the Catskills, and lentil dip with toasted garlic and crispy herbs, to name a few. All produce for sale and on your plate via . Come down, do some shopping (any purchase over $50 and you’ll get a dainty yet sturdy custom First Bloom x tote to commemorate this most blissful collaboration ❤️). We can’t wait to see you, to feed you!

Good morning, happy Sunday! A reminder to everyone coming in that 100% of the proceeds from our stickers ($5) goes directly to the local Delaware county food banks. We’ve raised hundreds of dollars this way, and you get a gorgeous little sticker to boot. Win-win.

ALSO— in the spirit of pantry to pantry community, if you’re coming down to do your shopping, we encourage you to first clean out your dry goods and bring over any unused, unopened, shelf-stable dry goods and leave them with us— we’ll make sure they get over to the local food pantry. Consider it a sort of “take a penny leave a penny” program, but with pantry items. Shop, donate, repeat. See you soon!

If you’d like to make these beans this week, you can. Step one, head to First Bloom or any approximation in your area. Step two, buy beans, onions and large dried chiles like New Mexican chiles (we have those). Step three, simmer those things together in plenty of water with a good amount of salt till the beans are very tender and creamy. Eat with tortillas (we have those, too), maybe some sliced radishes, some fried eggs, or leftover chicken. Nice.
