A Little History:
The Bluffton Oyster Company has occupied its site longer than any other oyster-shucking house in South Carolina. The present-day "factory," built in 1954, sits on reclaimed land, built up by more than a hundred years of discarded shell from previous oyster operations. The Bluffton Oyster Company is owned by Beaufort County and in 1999 received an award from the SC Department of C
ommerce as one of the 10 oldest operating companies in the state. What We Are:
The Bluffton Oyster Company is a typical, southern oyster house, where the shell stock is unloaded on the docks, washed with fresh water, and brought to the shucking tables. The oysters are harvested from the pristine waters of Bluffton's May River. To ensure sustainability, each year thousands of oyster shells are returned to the river for seeding future growth and harvest. All oysters are harvested by hand and shucked by hand. Many of our workers, pickers and shuckers, have been in the business all their lives.
