The Boonsboro Farmers Market was initiated in 2015 by The Boonsboro Environmental Commission and The Washington County Agricultural Center. The mission of the Boonsboro Farmers Market is to encourage a sustainable community by facilitating a market that provides local produce, meats, cheese, and breads to the community from within 100 mile radius of Boonsboro. To further strive to be a sustainable market we do not allow plastic grocery store bags and limit the use of one time disposable packaging.

News for this week from
78 AcresFarm - Smithsburg, Md

Hello Boonsboro - the Chestnuts have fallen and the last tastes of summer / first tastes of fall are on our tables.

All is going well at the farm with the landscape changing as the season moves along. Orchards dormant will soon be trimmed and fields coming out of production will be planted with cover crops to add nutrients to the soil for next yearโ€™s crops. Our fall field crops already in are ripening and later seasonal crops are being added each week (Broccoli, Potatoes, Celery, Radishโ€™s, Greens,Broccolini and more). Warm temperatures / cool temps / heavy rain and sunshine this week have given all crops a boost. Peach season is behind us and we are way for apples / pears and heartier foods for the chilly and cold season ahead.

Expect the last melons of the season, beans will begin to thin and summer squash will be with us a bit longer. We have begun pressing apples so cider will once again be a weekly offering at the market. Please see-up to date Farm photos below!!!! Chestnuts are on the ground, the farm weather station, the corn fields turned to other crops and in the distance the pear trees and beyond rows of cabbage, broccoli,Brussel sprouts and brocollini coming in, joined by Apple tree rows, winter squash, flat head cabbage and the last rows of summer squash. Every week the produce we bring to market is our own - all grown by US in Smithsburg, Maryland.

We are in fall high gear now as there will be changes each week in our varieties and volumes as we bring you the best of our fresh farm foods. We will try and keep our market offerings shout out up to date and work hard to get everything picked and packed onto our truck for market - remember please that some of our varieties are small yield treats that will only be on our tables for a short time and that the impact of the late spring freeze may have an effect on our fall apple varieties (also - in Smithsburg several weeks ago we had a bad storm with hail / ice!! - the hail did hit / damage some of the farm produce - 2026 has been a tough year for all growers in the mid-atlantic region with weather events like this!!).

Sweet yellow onions, red onions will again be on our tables this week, known for their rich flavor and firm body, for cold dishes or your general cooking. Watch for white and shallots filling out our savory table choices. New additions to our veggie harvest is brocollini, radishes and beets - these will soon be on our tables weekly. Peppers have matured with more varieties on our tables each week, from hot to sweet, plus field tomatoes are here in full force - heirlooms, slicers, low acid, tie dye, german stripe,Roma's, plum, heirloom cherry and more.

We hope everyone is enjoying the last holiday weekend of summer! It's hard to believe we're already at this point in the season.

Be sure to enjoy the watermelons, cantaloupes, honeydews, peaches, sweet corn, and tomatoes while you still can. Over the next few weeks, many of these summer favorites will begin ending as we transition into fall.

We didn't get any planting done this week, but that certainly doesn't mean it was a quiet week on the farm! We've been busy harvesting lots of vegetables and spending plenty of time in the orchard picking apples and pears. This time of year, it seems like there is always something ready to be picked.

Our online ordering and home delivery service continues to grow, and we want to thank everyone who has been using it! With the increasing number of orders, some deliveries may arrive a little later than our normal 5:00 PM goal this week as we continue to fine-tune our routes and logistics. We appreciate your patience as we work to make the service as efficient as possible.

Newly available in our online store this week are:

Spaghetti squash
Patty Pan squash
Asian pears by the half bushel
Red raspberries โ€“ limited quantities
Chinese Sticky Rice Corn
Simka plums
Red bell peppers
Yellow bell peppers
Deer pears
We're entering that unique time of year when you can still enjoy a fresh watermelon or ear of sweet corn while also bringing home apples, pears, and winter squash. Enjoy the summer favorites while they last, because fall is quickly making its way onto the farm!

Thank you, as always, for supporting Scenic View Orchards and local agriculture. Whether you order online for home delivery or visit us at one of our locations, we appreciate the opportunity to provide fresh, locally grown food for your family.
