It is finally time! Mushroom season is upon us. These mushrooms are called morels and can be found in the woods. We have about 200 acres of woods and we usually find tons of them. Morels are not to be eaten raw or consumed in large quantities because they contain a mildly toxic substance, which is destroyed in cooking. The best way to eat them is fried! Morels have a very short growing season and that is why they are considered a delicacy.

Feeding Mineral

We offer our cows Cattle Master 4 Mineral. This is a free choice mineral for beef cattle. Cows use minerals as we would use vitamins. These minerals can help with fertility, immunity, and nervous system function. The minerals we offer include calcium, phosphorus, salt ,zinc, copper, manganese, and vitamins (A,D3, and E). It is essential for beef cattle to have these minerals present in their everyday diet.

This past month we butchered a pig to stock up our freezer for the year. This is the first year that Nick and I have butchered the hog by ourselves, and it was a very good learning process. We harvested sausage, pork chops, ribs, roasts, Boston butt, and hams. It took us about 4 hours to complete the job, and it was a very satisfying feeling knowing where our meat is coming from for our upcoming meals.

This is a photo of me holding the back straps before cutting them into pork chops.

If you are interested in purchasing a half or a whole hog in the future, please let me know!!!

Happy Monday! Our beautiful 817 has finally had her baby!

The story of Mrs. 817. Last year when we got our cows preg checked, 817 was open/very early pregnant. This did not make much sense to us since our other cows were already 3-4 months pregnant. So, Nick and I took a chance on keeping her in hopes that she would have a late baby and be able to breed back with our spring moms. I am very thankful that we did. She had her baby this morning with no problems! Depending on the gender of the calf, I will post a video on preventive vaccines and ear tagging the calf.

We are not scheduled to calve for another 2 months for our ladies who have spring babies and another 6 months for our fall babies.

I have started planning what's going in the high tunnel this spring. This year my goal is to focus on perfecting two or three plants and making sure they thrive. I will be posting all about the soil we use for our seed trays all the way through our plants reaching maturity.

-Weaning Calves-
This past month we have been in the process of weaning our calves off their moms. In this process we separate the mothers from the calves, you can see in this photo that they are in an open pen where they can still see each other but no longer nurse. Weaning calves reduces the nutrient requirements for a cow. It will allow the cow to transfer nutrients previously going to milk production to her own body function. This will improve her condition and prepare her for the next calf.
