Please send love and prayers to our community today. There was an active shooter at one of our local elementary schools this morning.

Thankfully, no children were physically harmed. But I want to be very clear: harm was done.

Trauma was planted in those children. In those teachers and staff. In those families and parents who had to wait, wonder, and fear.

I spent much of the afternoon trying to calm my own nervous system before picking my children up from school. Even knowing they were safe, the weight of what happened so close to home was difficult to shake. I got some painting done, got to talk with other shaken locals at a coffee shop in the area, and process some through conversation.

Today, I’m holding that school community especially close. The children, the staff, the families, and everyone who had to experience something no one should ever have to experience.

No child should have to learn what an active shooter is. No parent should have to wonder if their child is safe at school.

Many times I have been asked "why vinegar hill"

But the answer isn't answered with a "why". It's answered with a "who"

My grandpa Tom

The hill we live on used to be covered in apple trees. Every fall the hill smelled of vinegar, a product of all the fallen apples. Thus the nickname "vinegar hill"

This painting is inspired by grandpa Tom and my middle child who is truly his soul friend.

Living on family land is truly such a privilege

Today I finally looked at that red clay sitting in my mortar and pestle and decided it was time to finish a project I started months ago.

This isn’t just any red clay.

It came from the worn bank along the roadside in Alabama where my family has lived for generations. More specifically, it was gathered from the spot directly beneath the memorial sign my family placed in honor of my great grandparents.

Today I ground that clay into a pigment and used it to add the finishing highlights to a bear painting inspired by my grandfather’s childhood.

There’s something special about making art with the very earth that has held so many generations of my family. It felt like the perfect way to bring his story to life.

One day, my cookbook will have a pasta sauce recipe that simply says, “Deglaze the pan with red wine.”
Most people will grab whatever bottle they have on hand, and that’s exactly what they should do.

Me? I’ll reach for a bottle of Bluestone Vineyard Merlot or Steep Face every single time. Some may say "that's a waste" but 1/3 a cup is all the pan needs to deglaze.... and it gives me an excuse to open the bottle.

The recipe will never mention that. It doesn’t need to.
Some ingredients are written on the page.... and some personal details are what make family recipes family recipes.

The end of season sale at Mistimorne Plants in Dayton is truly stunning. Come on out! Lots of perennials, tomato's, peppers, and annual flowers are still here!
And who doesn't love iced coffee and plants!?

Learning to pivot is not an enjoyable process. Generally, when you’re learning to pivot, it’s because something went wrong.

With 12 minutes left on the 90-minute timer, the canner suspiciously stopped steaming. I knew what happened before I even opened it: it had run dry. Those perfect quarts were now compromised.

I was already running a second batch. The beans that had not yet been pressure canned had been kept hot on the stove all day, and those are the beans that filled the jars currently in the canner in this photo.

So now I have some “twice canned beans.” They may end up as mush, but I know that going in. And honestly? I’m not worried.

These beans will thicken soups, stews, and chili all winter long. They’ll make creamy enchilada filling. They’ll become the quiet little heroes of countless fall meals.

Was double processing them annoying? Absolutely. Did I almost crash out? Also yes.

But did I pivot?

Also yes.

Sometimes preserving food isn’t about everything going perfectly. Sometimes it’s about knowing what went wrong, making a safe choice, and finding a way forward.

Yes. My 7 year old spent almost an hour removing "odd" beans and the random black bean from these pintos.

Yes. These are store bought. But canning them ourselves not only gives us control over what's in them, but gives my kids life experience and life skills!

Yep. They have already eaten through the quarts and pints of pintos I canned last fall.
