Our chickens are spoiled, that is for sure. Not only do they get a high quality feed, they get lots of treats and fresh foods. Scrambled eggs, scratch grains, lettuce, cabbage, tomatoes, cucumbers, watermelon, cantaloupe, squash, pumpkins, black soldier fly larvae & they get the free range when we are home.

Chicken fact: A broody chicken is a hen with a hormonal urge to incubate eggs, characterized by sitting on the nest 24/7, pulling out chest feathers to form a "broody patch" for direct warmth, and exhibiting aggressive, protective behaviors (like growling or pecking). She will stop laying, rarely eat/drink, and may stay broody for 21 days or longer, even on infertile eggs. Because they rarely eat, drink, or leave the nest, a broody hen can lose significant weight, become dehydrated, or suffer from severe health declines. A hen will go broody regardless of whether a rooster is present, meaning she can sit on a clutch of non-developing, infertile eggs. If you don't want her to hatch chicks, you can "break" the habit by making the nest uncomfortable, using cold packs (ice packs) in the nesting box to cool her chest, or isolating her from the nesting area.

I think we have a pretty group of chickens. They have a coop, an inclosed run with plenty of space to run, hop and fly. When we are home they get to run our 3 acres. In this picture is Clementine. She is a cinnamon queen. She will lay 250-300 large brown eggs a year.
