With Heavy Hearts, We Announce the Passing of Jay Stern

The Jay and Lloyd family is deeply saddened to share the passing of Jay Stern, a beloved figure in our community and one of the namesakes of Jay and Lloyd's Deli.

Jay always brought smiles to his customers' faces with his witty jokes and clever one-liners. He took immense pride in serving great food to the community, but his true joy came from connecting with people. Jay was at his best when the dining room was full, talking to families and ensuring everyone was enjoying their experience.

The former staff of Jay and Lloyd’s are heartbroken today. Jay wasn’t just a great boss; he was a friend to all who worked with him. He loved his employees, and they will forever hold wonderful memories of his kindness, humor, and generosity.

Jay’s passion for his work, his love for his community, and his ability to make every person feel welcome created a legacy that will not be forgotten. Our thoughts and prayers are with Jay’s family and with Lloyd’s family during this difficult time.

To all who were fortunate enough to know Jay, may his memory be a blessing. If you have a favorite memory or story of Jay, we invite you to share it in the comments as we celebrate his remarkable life together.

Thank you, Jay, for everything. You will be deeply missed.

A personal message from Lloyd:

Hey Jay,

"Relish this Day"

"You were kind of a big dill"

With love and knishes my old friend,

You are now.....

"One with everything" 🌭

Happy Pickles, Lloyd

Hope everyone is doing well. A new exibit on the history of NYC deli's comes next month to the NY Historical Society. Your favorite deli from Ave U will be part of it. We miss you all.

Savor the history of NYC's Jewish delis on a docent-led tour of the New-York Historical Society's new exhibit, "I'll Have What She's Having!"

We miss you all and hope everyone is staying safe out there.

A send-off to the many places, big and small, that closed in 2020.

Unfortunately, not every ending is a happy one.. As most of you already know, Jay & Lloyd's Kosher Deli had to shut down for good this week. This wasn’t a decision we took lightly. 28 years serving the community has meant the world to us. We want to thank our families who through the years had to deal with the ups and downs, and stood by us through it all. You gave us the strength to keep this going for as long as it did. To the staff -- and this one tugs at us the most -- for the last few months of craziness, you have been nothing short of amazing. You gave your all for us, even though we were shorthanded. We asked a lot from you and you never batted an eye. We can't thank you all enough for sticking with us, and you will always be part of our family. Through the years we have employed many people. We've seen teenagers become leaders in different industries and have their own families. Many of our staff have remained close and visited us through the years. We give our thanks to anyone that has ever been employed by us. We will all miss Yama who was with us from day one. There is no finer person, and his love for this deli will never be forgotten. He was the backbone who many customers came to see daily. Finally, to the reason we started this all in the first place... Our customers.. This business would never have survived for so long if it wasn't for you. There was nothing we loved more than seeing a full dining room and hearing the conversations and laughter of families and friends. Making this decision quickly, we couldn't say goodbye to you all. We will miss seeing each and every one of you. Kosher delis at one time were a staple of every neighborhood. Most are now gone and only a handful remain. Please support any that are still around and keep what was once something we all enjoyed around for other generations. We love you, we will miss you and most importantly, Thank You....

-Lloyd
