Ever seen a tiny chicken egg?
In the middle ages they were known as "c**k eggs" because villagers believed that they were laid by roosters. They also believed that if a serpent, toad, or witch incubated one that it would hatch into a terrible monster known as a "c**katrice". They believed that if they threw them over their roof peaks without breaking them they would destroy their evil power.
In Celtic culture they were known as "fairy eggs" (which is what I've always called them) and were believed to be a blessing from nature spirits or a gift left from woodland fairies. Some people preserved them in their homes or encased them in jewelry as charms for protection, good luck, and fertility.
But in modern times we acknowledge that it's just simply a glitch in the chickens reproductive system when her body releases an egg white and shell without a yolk.
Still pretty neat, though, and always puts a smile on my face. Have you ever seen one? What do you call them?
