Looking back at some scenes from our season from February to March.
We had a decent season and were glad to be back to it following 2 years skipped. By the numbers, we had 102 taps, gathered 1,094 gallons of sap, and boiled it down to 23 gallons of finished syrup. As always, it's a collaborative effort with some specializations: Matthew artfully tended the wood-fired arch, Kristoffer managed sap gathering, and Annie does final filtering and bottlings throughout the year.
You can purchase our syrup at the farm by appointment, monthly beginning in June, and through our website, hickorywindfarm.net

Spring is bringing all sorts of growth and plantings thus far. Oats seeding is well underway, with one of two 1.5 acre plots seeded with our 1950's case grain drill, and germinating nicely. A second plot is disced and awaiting final prep once the field dries back out from today's rain. Annie has had a stellar flush of blooming daffodils in the home gardens, directly outside our kitchen window, and we have been planting a copious number of apple and Native dogwood trees around the farmstead. Matthew has also meticulously tended the evaporator through to the successful close of another maple sugaring season, photos from which will be posted in the next few days.

Most of our maple sugarbush is set up with sapline tubing to gravity-feed the collecting tanks. But we still like to hang some buckets - the old-fashioned way to keep traditions alive. Nothing compares with the tink, tink, tink music of sap dropping into the bucket.

Perfect day to be in the woods gathering maple sap. The deep snow cover has given way to mud and leaf litter, the sun is shining, and sap is running. There are many steps to transfer and transport it to the big tank at the sugarhouse. You might say it was all downhill from the spout in the maple tree to the evaporator pans in the sugarhouse!

Sugaring Season begins - a stunning day to be out in the Maple woods: replacing saplines, tapping trees, and competing in the new non-Olympic sport, “Snow Rolling”.

Hello friends, this a farm family on eastern Long Island that Annie knows through her USDA/NASDA job. Hard working people, good hearted people, they lost an enormous amount of main buildings and equipment last November. The family has been farming here since 1661. Please consider even a small donation to help them get going again. 🙏
