Almost time for the Bellville Farmers' Market, Saturday, 9am - noon! Remember, we are there rain or shine! So even if the clouds look a little festive, grab your boots & umbrellas and meet us at the market! ☔️
Looking at what's left of the berry fields this afternoon, it looks like we'll have some fresh strawberries at the market! We wandered up and down a few rows this morning and were able to get a few pints picked, and there's a few more rows to pick yet if I have time this evening.🍓
Our local deer population recently breached our defenses and ravaged our fields, eating nearly 3,000 strawberry plants all the way to the ground! So the good news is, we no longer need to schedule our crew to remove those plants in a couple weeks, and we'll have some very tasty, well-fed deer hanging around the tiny farm come hunting season! 🦌
But the bad news is, there just aren't going to be many strawberries this year. Given all the costs we have wrapped up in them (the cost of plants, plus all the labor to plant, irrigate, w**d, maintain, and harvest them) we aren't able to sell them by the quart or flat at this time. We don't even have enough for our own family's needs, so we're selling them more as a special treat or topping for your salad greens to help fund our student internship positions. Thanks in advance for understanding! ❤️
We'll also have lettuce, rainbow broccoli, edible flowers, garlic scapes, radishes, gourmet petite carrots, snow peas, baby kale mix, kale, brassica sprouts, rhubarb, and whatever else we find ready in the gardens this evening. 🥗
And we'll have some plants, pickles, relishes, applesauce, and of course Gertie's baked goods, jams, and jellies. 🥒
Our friend Rachel from The Morrow Market will be helping to staff our booth this week, so be sure to come say hi and bring all of your questions so she can get them answered for you! 👩🌾
