What a wonderful day with students from Mackinaw Trail in Veterans Serving Veterans Community Park yesterday. We had a full day learning in detail about the Vietnam War from Col Bill Ewald, flag etiquette and our veteran’s food pantry from Steve Birdwell, the symbolism of all the engraved rocks, the 5K course and all it’s beautiful features to include: Paul McMullen’s Finish Line Rock, the beautiful 150’ starting wall with 22 2 None’s Rock recognizing their efforts at reducing veteran suicides, Kris Eggle’s Rock and Memorial Picnic Shelter, we talked of the vision of the Vietnam Memorial, the Korean War, World War I’s Flanders Field and the Red Poppies significance, Monarch Meadow and the Monarch Butterflies amazing migratory journey, the Native American Trail that goes through the park that was used for hundreds of years, the Native American plants in the park and their uses, the Blue Bird houses and their story, the story of the inception of our countries freedoms and our Constitution, the story of service and sacrifice that continues even after our soldiers return home. After lunch some of the students left their mark in the park forever by finishing a 100’ stone wall on our 5K course. Games were played after lunch. We at VsV are grateful for the opportunity to share our country’s and veterans journey and continued service to their community and fellow veterans.

Thank you to the Cadillac Middle School students for planting veggies and herbs for our 1st community garden. They planted veggies and herbs donated by the Cadillac CTC students. This garden will provide fresh veggies and herbs to our veterans and community and allow them to participate in the gardening experience even if they aren't able to at home. We also would like to thank the CTC students and the army veteran plant stand ( Mitch Gainer) for donating flowers for our Korean War memorial.

In the fall of 2018 Nancy and Dave DeVore made one of the most impactful donations to Veterans Serving Veterans Community Park; 16 30 ton truckloads or 480 tons of field stones from their farm along M-115 east of Cadillac. The rocks have been used for landscaping throughout the park and adorn our 5K course starting wall and turns throughout the course. As a result VsV’s 5K course is known for its beauty throughout the State of Michigan and beyond. At that time Mark Potter was working for Jason Lutke. Jason donated the use of his equipment and Mark and the staff their time to haul the rocks. We wanted to wait until the first traffic island was in so we could properly recognize Nancy & Dave and everyone who helped for their generosity. 😊❤️🇺🇸

We just had this rock engraved at the east park entrance underneath the Defending Freedom Sign. About 10% of our veterans were on the tip of the spear as combat veterans. However, all who served were the weight of the shaft of the spear that gave it the force necessary to preserve the freedoms we all enjoy.

Today we remembered and honored 3 of our VsV extraordinary volunteers; who passed away recently. We are grateful for Deb & Ron Farr of Custom Sandblasting of Lowell, MI for all the beautiful engraving they have done on our behalf on park rocks. Mike Sherwood, Carl Lamphere and Keith Cooper continued to serve God, country, community and their fellow veterans after their military service. Their rocks will be placed at the 1/2 mile marks on our beautiful 5K course.
😊❤️🇺🇸
