Just can’t win this week. My mind and body are so tired! We lost a total of 5 chickens to the fox, 3 to heat stroke, 1 to old age, 1 on hospice, another got a concussion from being run over by the golf cart and then as we complete the new 8 foot tall fence, a storm blows in like a beast and knocks a tree down on it.

Fox got 3 in 3 days, 1 golf cart accident, 2 old age and going over the rainbow bridges, and of course the worst part…the solar door failure! 5 chickens gone, 8 recovering, and 2 more rainbow bridge bound… I’m all cried out this week. Today we are raising the fence 4 feet all the way around!! 💪💪🙌

Traumatized. Devastated. I don’t know what else to say. I should’ve learned a lesson from The Hot Mess Homestead Why would a solar door fail, even though it was a brand new battery and charger bought this year? And it failed on one of the hottest days of the week. The solar door failed to open. It was incredibly hot and I lost two birds already.

How old are your oldest chickens? We let them live out their happy little lives here at the homestead. Peaches is 6. Most of my hens live to about 6 years with a few still going strong at 7 years. Peaches is a Rhode Island Red x Frizzle Easter Egger cross. She laid a pretty sage egg for 5 years but haven’t seen her egg this year.
