Every substance is made up of many tiny particles called atoms. Atoms of all elements contain electrons, protons and neutrons. Neutrons and protons reside in the center of the atom, the nucleus. And the electron resides outside the nucleus. Atoms have no overall charge. Neutrons are uncharged, so an atom has an equal number of electrons and protons. Because the charge of proton and electron is opposite.
