Apples are the signature crop of Washington, which grows nearly two thirds of all apples in the United States. The state’s fertile volcanic soil, long sunny days, and cool nights create ideal conditions for developing flavor and crispness. More than 100 million boxes of apples are harvested here each year, and over 30 varieties are grown commercially, from the ever popular Honeycrisp and Gala to the heritage Spitzenberg and Gravenstein.

Apple trees thrive in full sun with well drained soil and require regular pruning to encourage healthy growth and fruit production. In Washington, growers often use dwarf or semi dwarf rootstocks to make orchards easier to manage and harvest. Blossoms appear in spring and depend on bees for pollination, while harvest typically begins in late August and can extend into November depending on the variety. With proper storage in cool, controlled environments, apples can stay fresh for months, which is why you see Washington apples in stores year round.

In the kitchen, apples are wonderfully versatile. Tart varieties like Granny Smith add brightness to salads or savory dishes, while sweeter choices such as Fuji or Golden Delicious shine in pies, crisps, and sauces. Apples can be pressed into cider, roasted alongside meats and vegetables, or simply enjoyed fresh as a crisp snack. Storing apples in a cool, dry place at home helps them last longer, making them a reliable staple for both everyday meals and special seasonal recipes.
