To our Cambridge City family,
We want to share an honest update and something from the heart.
On August 11, the storm cost Cambridge City Supermarket more than $200,000 in inventory and damaged many of our coolers and freezers. Our first priority was your safety. We paid ServPro substantial amount to clean and sanitize the entire store, and with the Health Department’s approval, we reopened with limited capacity and fresh stock.
We aren’t through it yet. Repairing the coolers and freezers is estimated to cost more than $135,000. In all, this storm will cost us close to half a million dollars.
These past weeks have been hard. Sales are about one-third of what they were before the storm, which isn’t enough to cover these costs. We restocked expecting families would need to replace what they’d lost, but much of it went unsold, and we’ve had to throw out produce and short-dated items more than once. Our insurance claim is in process, but until the repairs are done, we can’t carry most of our refrigerated and frozen items. We know how inconvenient that is for you, and we are truly sorry. We expect to fix this in the coming weeks and get back to full service.
Now for what’s on our hearts.
Cambridge City Supermarket has served this town for years. It was here through good seasons and hard ones. It’s where neighbors run into each other, where parents send their kids for a gallon of milk, and where many of you have shopped for as long as you can remember. A store like this is part of what holds a small town together. Many small towns have lost their grocery store, and once it’s gone, it rarely comes back.
That’s why we believe the market itself matters most, not who owns it or who stands at the front door. What counts is that the doors stay open and the shelves are full for the people of Cambridge City. We’ve kept them open through all of this because we believe in this town.
Some of you have asked about Scott. Our company sent Scott from Texas to help serve this community, and we’re grateful for the months he spent here. He later decided to return to his hometown. That was a personal decision, and no employer can control it. We wish him well, and if he ever wants to come back, our door is open.
Most of all, we want to speak for the people who work here every day. Most of our team was born and raised right here in Cambridge City. They’re your neighbors, your classmates, and your friends. Through the storm, the cleanup, the empty coolers, and the uncertainty, they kept showing up for you. We’re proud of every one of them. Lately, some of them have heard remarks that hurt. Please treat our team, and each other, with the kindness this town is known for. They have earned it.
Our dearest hope is to bring every one of our employees back to work, with full hours, as soon as possible. That depends on you. Every visit and every purchase helps a local family that works here.
Your support also lets us give back. Before the storm, we were proud to support our local schools and other good causes in town. Once we’re back on our feet, we want to do even more, starting with our firefighters, who are always there for us. When you shop here, you’re helping your neighbors, your children’s classrooms, and your first responders.
Some have asked who owns the market. It’s owned by a Texas-based company, but our hearts are here in Cambridge City, and so is our commitment.
