Good morning, Finley Family Farm Friends.
Garden Therapy - Prep for Fried Okra
This morning I decided to start prepping my okra for Saturday. Don’t forget it is Okra Day here at the farm.

Fried Okra:
My recipe is to cut my okra into bite-sized pieces. Wash to remove some of the slime. Then parboil for five minutes to remove more slime. Once parboiled, lay them out on a cookie sheet. Prepare batter mixture. First, I soak them in buttermilk and an egg. Once soaked, I remove them from the buttermilk-and-egg mixture. Next, I put them into my meal batter. I like to use Louisiana Fish Fry as a shortcut. You know the rest. Drop them into a fry of hot grease and let the good roll.

Does anyone have a different way of cooking fried okra that you would love to share? I am all ears.

Good morning, Finley Family Farm Friends,
On this gloomy summer morning, it is time for my garden therapy.
Garden Theraphy- Picking Okra.
Even though the stand is temporarily closed, there is still one crop growing in the garden: okra. Okra can grow until the frost hits in the winter. I saw a hack on Facebook where a man was gathering his okra, showing how to harvest it. He would cut the leaves where the okra was growing and then pick the okra. What he was able to do was harvest the okra while allowing the stem to continue growing. It is somewhat hard to explain, so I am attaching a picture to show you. The picture shows an example of what the man did to his okra stalks. I also took a picture of the peas to show you that they are all coming along.

I will open the stand on Saturday, August 8th. I am calling it Okra Day. I will have pickled okra, $5 baskets of okra, maybe I will fry up a batch, a few watermelons, red potatoes, figs, zucchini, and banana bread. See you soon!

I am in the field doing my gardening therapy when I realized I need to do something about this okra and the discovered field corn that is growing in the garden. So, I will open the stand on Saturday, July 25, and invite you all to come and purchase some corn and okra.
