Alongside a beautiful bouquet of flowers, why not gift her a bouquet of flours too? 🌾🌸

Our stone-milled flours are made from organically-grown, glyphosate-free wheat grown right here on our family farm — bringing wholesome nutrition, incredible flavor, and a little extra joy to every loaf, cookie, crust, and cake she bakes.

Happy Earth Day from Sandhill Mill šŸŒŽ

Caring for the land isn’t just part of what we do—it’s the foundation of everything we grow and mill.

Through regenerative practices like minimal tillage, we work to preserve soil structure and reduce disruption beneath the surface. By capitalizing on crop residue from the previous year’s harvest, we protect and nourish the soil naturally, helping retain moisture and prevent erosion. And with the use of cover crops, we keep living roots in the ground, improving soil health and building resilience for seasons to come.

These practices aren’t shortcuts—they’re long-term commitments to the health of our fields, our crops, our community, and the quality of Sandhill Mill products stocked in your kitchen.

Because at the end of the day, we believe if we take care of the land, the land will take care of us.

At Sandhill Mill, quality always comes first—but sustainability is a close second šŸŒ¾ā™»ļø

Not every load of grain passes food grade testing on the first round. When that happens, we don’t give up on it. We take an extra cleaning step to remove low test weight kernels (those lighter kernels often point to immaturity from less-than-ideal growing conditions). Then we pull new samples and send them in for another round of testing.

Whatever comes back as good, food-grade quality is stone-milled into fresh flour. Grain that still doesn’t meet food-grade standards is never wasted—it’s removed from our warehouse and put to good use as goat and cattle feed, held back for seed for next year’s wheat crop, or sold to mushroom and mealworm farms. (Those farms also happily take our bran and dirty rye!)

From field to mill to feed, we work hard to honor the whole harvest. Very little goes to waste—and that’s something we’re proud of.

There’s nothing quite like unloading a trailer full of freshly cleaned wheat berries at Sandhill Mill 🌾

Once our wheat berries return from cleaning, they’re unloaded into our on-farm storage warehouse and samples are pulled for testing. We test every lot for food-grade quality, along with protein content and falling numbers—important data our baker community likes to know and trusts.

When the (hopefully favorable!) test results are back, we can begin stone-milling the grain right here at Sandhill Mill into fresh, nutrient-dense flour for you and your families.

Stay tuned—we have one Sandhill Mill grain variety still moving through the cleaning and testing stages. Once it’s approved for milling, we’ll share updates here and through our email list.

Spring is {almost} here! 🌱

That means it’s time to start prepping fields for small grains. First up: a pass with the speed disc. This shallow tillage helps level the ground and break down last year’s crop residue—creating a smooth seedbed and setting the stage for strong seed-to-soil contact (key for even germination).

Next, we’ll come through with the grain drill, placing each seed about Ā¾ā€ deep. And with snow in the forecast this week, it will be the perfect ā€œdrinkā€ to kick start germination.

Stay tuned for growth updates from this field—and others!

Happy Pi Day! 🄧 3.14

In honor of the day, I made my first homemade apple pie using a homemade crust made with our Soft White Winter Wheat seed. The aesthetics need a little practice, but the flavor was absolutely on point!

Soft White Winter Wheat is the variety we grow for our pastry flour, which is perfect for tender pie crusts, pastries, cookies, muffins, and other delicate baked goods. The good news is that our Soft White Winter Wheat got a great start last fall, and if the weather cooperates this spring and summer, we’re hopeful for a bountiful harvest.

That means we’ll be able to bring you freshly stone-milled Soft White Pastry Flour this fall—just in time for your Thanksgiving pie baking. 🄧

Here’s to good harvests, homemade pie, and celebrating the tastiest number of the year!
