Then vs Now post for our Muscovy ducks. It amazes me how much they’ve grown and changed from the ducklings we brought home last summer! Some have found new pastures but most have stayed with us. Now they are laying like crazy for us and soon we will be filling our incubator with a bunch of their eggs So excited to see what the different color combinations will make and what all their babies will look like!

Moved the fence to give the pigs a new grazing area. We love having KuneKunes because they gradually clear our land for garden plots and they are so respectful of the electric netting! Plus they are the absolute cutest!!

Spring has spring and we’ve just had our newest additions to LPF born last night. Lady Lardbottom is a great first time mama and gave birth to four happy healthy piglets! They’ll be looking for new pastures in 8 weeks so send us a message if you’re interested in making these cuties part of your farm family!

The warmer weather tricked some of our scuppernongs into fruiting again! Our little grove needs lots of TLC but after a good trim and new supports it will be a gorgeous and fruitful hideaway! What we cut will be propagated and used to expand our mini vineyard or it will be sold to folks looking to add to or start their own! DIYers keep an eye out for grape vine wreaths! They are a wonderful blank canvas you can use to decorate for every season and holiday!

Photo dump! We’ve had a busy couple weeks here! Chuck and Mignon have found a new pasture with a great family to take care of them. The bacon bits are growing like crazy and soon some of them will be off to a new home as well. New arrivals came in the form of seven freshly hatched bouncing beautiful baby quails. Our new tractor was delivered which will be a MAJOR help with chores and improvements around the property. And we are experimenting with permaculture practices to improve our soil and prolong our growing season!
The colder weather is coming and the days are getting shorter but our real work is only beginning. There’s always lots to do around here and we’ve got so many plans to help improve quality and production during peak season we can’t wait to share it with all of you!

Our first hüglekultur bed is complete!! Hüglekultur or “mound culture” is a permaculture practice that helps improve soil fertility, water retention, and soil warming. We wanted to try this method to help us get the most out of the Georgia clay that sits hard as a rock just beneath the topsoil in our garden. The process, albeit laborious, is fairly simple. First we dug a pit that was 10 ft long, 5 ft wide, and 1.5 ft deep. That was the part that took the longest and required the most effort. Then filled it in with large logs I found near the brush pile that were already starting to decompose. Filled in the gaps with some brown mater (leaves and the empty burs from our chestnut harvest) then added smaller branches and sticks. Then added some straw I cleaned out of the goat pen. After that we piled on the dirt we removed from the pit and added some compost et voilà!! One down and many more to go but we are on our way to having a gorgeous garden this spring!

Chuck and Mignon are loving their new all stock from Floyd Farms and we love supporting one of our local feed stores! It’s too good not to share and luckily they don’t mind the chickens trying to get in on the action!

So far our Coturnix quails have managed to be the most productive animals on the farm. We get 7+ fertile eggs a day from these little cuties!! Our first batch just hatched out and 14 little chicks go to their new home this weekend. The incubator was cleaned out and loaded back up and in about 21 days we will have another round of babies up for discussion. Our flock has a good mix of colors and its so fun to see all the different patterns appear in the chicks as they grow! The adult birds are such easy keepers and though they may be smaller, the eggs are delicious! You can use them in place of chicken eggs at a 2:1 ratio…which is easy enough to do when you’ve got some hens laying multiple eggs a day!! Highly recommend adding quails to your mix if you haven’t already!

Growing up in an Italian-American household, nothing screamed holiday season quite like chestnuts. They were an after dinner staple at our Thanksgiving and Christmas tables for as long as I can remember. So you can imagine my delight when I learned we had chestnut trees on our newly purchased property! It has been a real treat to be able to enjoy them as often as I please (and at a much more affordable rate than any grocery store could ever offer!!!) and an even greater treat to be able to share them with my friends and family. I’ve become more familiar with this delicious little nut than I ever thought I could be. It is tasty and versatile and good for you too! I’ve learned about a hundred different applications and can’t wait to try them all. Going out to harvest these chestnuts has made me feel a little closer to my family that I left back in New York. And every day I look at these trees it’s a reminder that we are indeed living our dream of being able to provide nourishment for ourselves and our loved ones.
