So I found my next project... opening Missouri home kitchens beyond the current allowance of "non-perishable foods" and into hot kitchens! 🍲🔥
Right now, it is perfectly legal to sell homemade cookies or bread, but the moment a passionate cook wants to sell a hot dinner to their neighbor, it's illegal. We can fix this.
Sign the petition below! We need to get a Microenterprise Home Kitchen Operations (MEHKO) law passed for Missouri. Allowing small home kitchens to safely serve hot meals makes sense on multiple levels:
a) Lowers the barrier to entry: Allows talented cooks to serve the public without the massive expense of renting or outfitting a commercial kitchen.
b) Creates a stepping stone: Allows cooks to test the waters and establish a customer base before taking out loans for a brick-and-mortar restaurant.
c) Builds the local economy: Empowers everyday people to support their families using the culinary skills they already have.
d) Expands community food options: Brings diverse, authentic, and fresh new food choices directly to our neighborhoods.
Other states already do this safely. It’s time for Missouri to catch up.
Let me know in the comments: What is a home-cooked meal you would absolutely buy from a neighbor?
