A Little History:
Villa Basque Café is a quaint and unique restaurant located in Carson City, Nevada. The café was founded by locals Pete and Martha Coscarart over 17 years ago and offers patrons a fascinating look into Basque culture an

d an exceptional dining experience. As a teenager, Pete came to Nevada without knowing any English to work as a sheep herder. Along his journey, Pete developed a desire to share his talents and culture with others. Pete began crafting Basque Chorizo, a type of sausage from the border region of Spain and France, from his family’s traditional recipe in Battle Mountain, Nevada in 1984. Eventually, this love of his culture, family and traditions inspired him to offer his Chorizo to the public and he opened Villa Basque Café with Martha. Today, “Pete’s World Famous Chorizo” is available at the café in numerous authentic Basque dishes and for take-home in the deli counter—perfect for grilling! Not to be outdone, Martha hand crafts an assortment of Mexican Tamales including: pork, chicken, chorizo and sweet tamales for the holidays. Villa Basque Café offers patrons an extensive breakfast and lunch menu rich in Basque, Mexican and American dining options. The meals are hearty, rich, and flavorful and served by people as unique and engaging as the dishes themselves. Villa Basque Café works hard to ensure that only the freshest and finest ingredients go into each and every culinary delight. Orange, carrot and grapefruit juice is freshly squeezed before your eyes! Portions are large, satisfying and affordable. Traditional American breakfast and lunch items include omelets, biscuits and gravy, sandwiches, burgers, and a huge assortment of healthy salads. If Mexican is more your liking, try one of many south of the border treats like: enchiladas, tacos, carnitas or fajitas. Take a break from the ordinary and try one of the many Basque culinary favorites available on the menu. From the paella to the roasted lamb, and the Sheepher Cheeseburger to the home made Basque chili, these traditional Basque dishes are different and delicious. And, of course, don’t forget about the Chorizo…yes, the Chorizo. With so many dishes, there is something for virtually every palate.

From Battle Mountain, where it all began, to Carson City today, it’s special to see Pete’s famous Basque chorizo still being enjoyed across the communities that have carried it forward.

We’re honored to keep making it the same way it’s always been made. Made with care, quality ingredients and deep respect for the tradition Pete started. ❤️

We so enjoyed hosting students from Legacy Christian Academy for a field trip recently. They got to learn about some Basque history and the story behind this restaurant.

It means so much to continue sharing Pete’s story and carrying his legacy forward in a way that connects with new generations. The students enjoyed samples of his famous Basque chorizo and classic milkshakes along the way.

His granddaughter was also part of the group and was very proud to share her grandpa’s story with her classmates.

Thanks so much to the students and teachers for hanging out with us- we loved having you! 😊

With deep sadness, we announce the passing of Pete Coscarart, the beloved heart of Villa Basque Café. He is now in the arms of Jesus and will forever remain in our hearts.

To our family, he was a loving husband, devoted father, proud grandfather, brother, uncle. To Carson City, he was a friend, a familiar face, and the warmth that greeted you by swinging doors of his kitchen.

Pete was raised in a Basque village in Spain, where he learned the traditions of family, food, and hospitality that would shape his entire life. He later made his way to Nevada as a sheepherder later planting roots in Battle Mountain at Lemaire’s Store. Eventually building his legacy in Carson City, where Villa Basque Café became more than a restaurant. It became a gathering place, a second home, and a part of this community.

Pete believed everyone who walked through the doors was family. His kindness, humor, generosity, and welcoming spirit created a space where birthdays were celebrated, friendships were formed, and generations grew up around the same tables.

He quietly supported those who serve our community. Pete was known to wake before dawn to help pack meals for firefighters out battling wildfires. Veterans, first responders, and local law enforcement always had a place at his table, and many became lifelong friends. Villa Basque is not just a café; it is a place of comfort and care for the people who protect Carson City.

His greatest pride was his family. He leaves behind his wife, two daughters, 7 grandchildren, and generations who will carry forward his love, strength, traditions, and spirit.

We are deeply grateful for the outpouring of love from this community he cherished so much. Your stories, memories, and support mean more than we can express. Villa Basque Café will continue serving the community in honor of Pete’s legacy.
We remain committed to the warmth, hospitality, and traditions Pete built this café upon.

A memorial service to celebrate Pete’s life will be held on Saturday, February 28th at 10am. Location: Calvary Chapel, 1635 E. Clearview Drive Carson City, NV 89701. All who knew and loved him are welcome. We will be closed on Saturday, February 28th to allow family and staff to attend services, and will reopen on Tuesday, March 3rd.

We find comfort in imagining him in Heaven now, his accordion in hand, filling the room with the same joy he gave us here.
