THE AI DATA CENTER MIGHT ACTUALLY BENEFIT IRON COUNTY. Change my mind.
Everybody keeps arguing: “It’s evil.” or “It brings jobs.”
But maybe that’s not the real conversation.
The real question is:
If this thing is coming anyway… how do WE make Southern Utah benefit from it?
From publicly available information, the proposed project west of Cedar City claims:
closed-loop cooling systems
recycled water systems
relatively low ongoing water use once operational
major infrastructure investment
Should we scrutinize it? YES.
Water matters here. Air quality matters here. Power infrastructure matters here. And yes — people are right to ask questions about EMF and long-term health impacts too.
So negotiate.
Require hardened infrastructure. Require Faraday-style shielding where possible. Require transparency. Require community oversight. Require REAL community benefit agreements.
Because giant corporations should NEVER get a free pass.
But this is still America.
People can legally buy land. Companies can legally build projects. And unless laws stop them, they probably will.
So maybe the smartest move isn’t just screaming “NO.”
Maybe it’s leverage.
These facilities create enormous amounts of waste heat.
So why waste it?
Make THEM pay to:
heat regenerative greenhouses year-round
grow local food through winter
heat a public community pool in Enoch
support a recreation center
help heat low-income housing
build infrastructure that actually benefits local families
If they’re going to profit from Iron County… then Iron County should profit too.
Other places around the world already reuse data center heat for pools, homes, and district heating systems.
So if industrial-scale infrastructure is coming to Southern Utah anyway…
Should we spend all our energy fighting online?
Or should we negotiate HARD and make sure local families actually benefit from it?
If it’s coming… let’s make it count.
Comment leverage if you agree.
