Depicted here in a Postcard from the 1950s, Charles Washington Hall occupies one of the four corners that Charles Washington set aside for public buildings when he laid out Charles Town.

The original Market House was built on this site in 1806 and served as both a public market and meeting space. During the Civil War, it was burned by retreating Union troops in 1862 to prevent Confederate forces from obtaining ammunition stored inside.

The present building was completed in 1874. While some materials from the original structure were reused, the new building reflected the Italianate style that was popular across the United States during the mid-to-late nineteenth century. Its tall arched windows, brick pilasters, decorative pediments, and prominent cornice are all characteristic features of the style. The wooden belvedere above the roof is a later addition, but it is consistent with the building's historic appearance.

Over the years, Charles Washington Hall has adapted to the changing needs of the community. Businesses occupied the first floor, including the U.S. Post Office. In 1896, the building served as the local post office when the nation's first Rural Free Delivery service was launched from Charles Town. The second floor was used as an auditorium and gathering space until the New Opera House opened nearby.

Following a major renovation completed in 2017, Charles Washington Hall remains a familiar landmark in downtown Charles Town. Its history reflects the changing needs of the community and the continued use of historic buildings across generations.

πŸ«› Got a dad-joke aficionado in your life? Here's a high-protein gift we think he might appreciate - wish him a Happy Fava's Day with locally grown beans, high in protein, folate, and fiber.

Fava beans are commonly used in stewed bean dishes, hummus and falafel, salads, and pasta dishes. We have them available this week, certified organic and grown locally by Franklin Sustainable Farms.

Prepare fresh Fava beans by
- removing the beans from their shell
- blanch in boiling water for two minutes
- drop the beans into cold water to "shock" them and prevent further cooking
- peel the waxy outer skin from the beans
- now the beans are ready for seasoning and cooking!

Here's some more suggestions for cooking your fresh fava beans:
