Because of the ongoing federal government shutdown, USDA SNAP benefits have been suspended. We know how deeply this affects many of our neighbors, families, and households. To help bridge the gap, Mecklenburg County Government and the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Food Policy Council have stepped in to provide support at our market. This week, EBT/SNAP beneficiaries can receive a $50 market token stipend to use with eligible vendors. To receive the stipend:

1) You must be a resident of Mecklenburg County
2) You must present a valid ID
3) You must present your EBT card

Stop by the South End Farmers Market tent for details and tokens. Limited funding is available, and SNAP recipients will receive this one-time incentive on a first-come, first-served basis.

We are deeply saddened to announce that Ann Hamilton, who has been a vital part of our market since the very beginning, passed away this week. While she will no longer be physically with us, her drive, energy, and genuine love for our community will always remain. Ann helped build this market into what it is today and helped cultivate not just a market, but a place of connection and care.

This Saturday, students from Williams Montessori join us with their farm-based creations. These 7th–12th graders aren’t just studying science and sustainability, they’re living it. At their school’s campus farm, they care for pigs, goats, chickens, bees, and gardens, learning how to turn hard work into community and enterprise. Following the Montessori model of independence and real-world learning, students make and sell goat milk soaps and lotions, honey, beeswax lip balm, and tea — products born from their own efforts and ingenuity. By building a microeconomy, these young people are learning not only how to grow food and care for animals, but how to think locally, sustainably, and entrepreneurially. Stop by their tent this Saturday to support their work and see firsthand how this next generation of farmers and artisans are shaping our community’s future.

Oh hail, the humble potato! The white potato was first cultivated by the Inca more than 7,000 years ago. Spanish explorers introduced it to Europe in the 16th century, where it became a staple crop, transforming diets across the continent and later in North America. Today, it’s one of the world’s most important food sources. An excellent source of vitamin C, potassium, and vitamin B6, they are naturally fat-free and low in calories, potatoes also contain antioxidants and resistant starch, which support digestive health. It's also one of the more flexible ingredients. As a main dish or a side or even a snack, potatoes deliver balanced nutrition and delicious sustained energy. Be sure to pick some up this Saturday. Looking for potato ideas? See this week's newsletter for a link to 70 tasty ones!

Born in North Carolina, has worked under various names in its over 70-year history, but always with one purpose: to ensure the financial health of its members. One of the most meaningful aspects of a weekly farmers market is the personal relationships that form between shoppers and vendors. These connections go beyond simple transactions. They built trust, familiarity, and often true friendships. Regular shoppers come to know the farmers, food artisans, and crafters by name. Our vendors, in turn, recognize loyal customers, remembering their preferences and even sometimes setting aside a favorite item. This sense of community creates a warmth and friendliness that’s rare in traditional retail settings. Conversations at the market stall might include cooking tips, family updates, or stories about how a product was grown or made to further deepen the bond. Over time, these relationships cultivate a sense of belonging and accountability. Shoppers feel good about supporting local livelihoods, while vendors feel pride in nourishing their neighbors. It’s this human connection, as much as the food itself, that makes our farmers market such a valued gathering place.

Muscadine grapes hold a special place in North Carolina’s agricultural and cultural history. Our state proudly claims the “Mother Vine,” a centuries-old muscadine still growing on Roanoke Island, believed to be one of the oldest cultivated grapevines in the country. Scuppernogs, a yellowish/bronze variety of muscadines, were first discovered along the Scuppernong River in eastern North Carolina in the 1600s. Nutritionally, muscadine grapes are packed with antioxidants, compounds linked to heart health and reduced inflammation. They are also high in dietary fiber, vitamin C, and manganese, making them a wholesome addition to a balanced diet. In addition to joyful snacking, muscadines shine in both sweet and savory recipes such as cobblers, crisps, relishes, chutneys, and sauces for roasted meats. Be sure to pick some up at our market this weekend and savor a taste of our time-honored culinary heritage.
