Hello, Jam fans!

A note for local customers: My wife Rachel of Fairweather Farm is having a PLANT SALE on her website (fairweatherfarmtea.com) right now and at the Charlottesville City Market on Water Street tomorrow, May 9. She's focusing on Pollinator-friendly and Native Perennials.

And now... jam! Strawberries came early, hot and heavy this year, coming out of a hot March and early April. Now it's cold (it was 39 outside as I began to type), so they're taking a break under their cozy row covers. In the 50 degree darkness the plants don't grow, berries don't ripen, and harvesting ceases.

I'm not sure how long this interruption will last, for now I'm taking advantage of this break to update the website and send this email. Last year the frost in mid April stressed out the plants enough that the season never really recovered, so I was primed to jump on early berries this year. We might see more, or not. One of my strawberry farmers told me they had so much damage from the frost that they wouldn't have any berries for me at all this year. They're planning to leverage the few berries they have to keep customers happy and coming back next year with pick-your-own and on-farm sales. Farming (and working with farmers like I do) is certainly never boring!!

We've worked through 2 pallets of berries (about 1600 #) in the past 3 weeks, so we've got a lot of Strawberry jam flavors available! The last holdovers from the winter are dwindling but some gems remain: plain Red Raspberry jam (https://checkout.square.site/merchant/R958MW15XQQK4/checkout/ZKHH34YQHQ7NB2FBBIKSEF3G) , Plum + Tart Cherry jam (https://checkout.square.site/merchant/R958MW15XQQK4/checkout/ZO7Z6E7V3UPDS2UO7NV5UMHV) , Plum + Blackberry jam (https://checkout.square.site/merchant/R958MW15XQQK4/checkout/66ARAIDHCWCE3475FYRTMQWN) , Pear + Ginger jam (https://square.link/u/jmuhEENI) , Blackberry + Meyer Lemon jam (https://checkout.square.site/merchant/R958MW15XQQK4/checkout/EZQF7QPAARSMGYIW3DUQ4FOX) , and more.

Now back to the stove, and then loading for the farmers markets tomorrow. Thanks for your support!!

Best,
Daniel

Free Apricot Jam!

We're giving away 6 jars of Apricot to customers who shop for jam + tea this weekend- every jar you buy is another chance to win!

Hi!

We're having our first Sweepstakes! I made some Apricot jam for family recently out of my last bags of frozen 2025 fruit, and decided on the fairest way to distribute those jars: through a random drawing. Here's how it'll work:

Every jar purchased at IX Farmers Market (tomorrow from 9-1) or online (starting now) will get entered into the giveaway spreadsheet and assigned a number on Sunday night. I'll use a random number generator to pick the winners and notify them (hopefully you!) on Monday. The free jars of Apricot jam will arrive with the rest of your order, however you've chosen to receive it.

Now onto the jam that's actually for sale, there's lots to choose from!! Red Raspberry + Meyer Lemon Jam (https://checkout.square.site/merchant/R958MW15XQQK4/checkout/XJNFJ2AGRXJTXGT5XFOVJK3H) and Blackberry + Meyer Lemon Jam (https://checkout.square.site/merchant/R958MW15XQQK4/checkout/EZQF7QPAARSMGYIW3DUQ4FOX) came out of the last delivery of boldly tangy + floral citrus from Planet Earth Diversified. Pears from West Virginia and Ginger from south of Charlottesville combine into an energizing + beloved blend in Pear + Ginger Jam (https://square.link/u/jmuhEENI) . Classic favorites like Strawberry + Rhubarb Jam (https://square.link/u/TwjUlgEI) , Strawberry + Seedless Red Raspberry Jam (https://checkout.square.site/merchant/R958MW15XQQK4/checkout/F5O5SAFSA5TDKQMTO2APE6FN) , and Red Raspberry Jam (https://checkout.square.site/merchant/R958MW15XQQK4/checkout/F5O5SAFSA5TDKQMTO2APE6FN) (with the seeds) are all still available although limited.

That's all for today, now I'm off to pit tart cherries and prep for the IX Market tomorrow. Come on down, looks like beautiful weather for it!! As always about 30% of our annual gross revenue is paid directly to local farmers, because without the local fruit they grow, there's no local jam!

Thanks for your support!

Best,
Daniel

We're running out of jam!

Strawberry + Blueberry flavors are disappearing fast, and won't be back until May + June.

Also Meyer Lemons and Calamondins may vanish soon until next winter.

Good morning:

It's gray in C-ville today, but warmer than it has been. Snow is almost finished melting in the rain, and its starting to feel like springtime, even though its supposed to snow again tonight. I'm beginning to see the bottoms of my freezers as I continue to cook my way through my frozen 2025 fruit, and I figured I should send you an update: last week I cooked up the last batches of Strawberries and Blueberries.

Strawberry flavors will reappear in May, when the fine folks at Seamans Orchard in Roseland and Agriberry Farm in Hanover begin to harvest strawberries again. Hopefully we will coast through springtime on a gentle crescendo of gradually warming temperatures, instead of yoyoing between extremes like we had last April, with a hard frost and multiple 80 degree days in the same week. That rollercoaster upset the strawberry plants, so they stopped flowering, and in the end it cut the season short by 2-3 weeks.

Blueberries will return as well, usually around mid-June once the same pair of farms start to harvest. I love the deep sweetness and acidity of Blueberry jam, especially paired with Meyer Lemons from Mike Clark at Planet Earth Diversified in Stanardsville VA.

Another unfortunate note about scarcity: the ice storm we had a few weeks ago caused a collapse in part of the greenhouse where Mike grows the Meyer Lemons and Calamondin Oranges that I use in my jams.

As a result the supply of Strawberry Meyer Lemon (https://checkout.square.site/merchant/R958MW15XQQK4/checkout/KGT7KTNM2OGTP27H7STY7OJK) , Red Raspberry + Meyer Lemon (https://checkout.square.site/merchant/R958MW15XQQK4/checkout/XJNFJ2AGRXJTXGT5XFOVJK3H) , Blueberry + Meyer Lemon (https://checkout.square.site/merchant/R958MW15XQQK4/checkout/W2CEXGOQZKKU4DRXA7BLL7VC) , Blackberry + Meyer Lemon (https://checkout.square.site/merchant/R958MW15XQQK4/checkout/EZQF7QPAARSMGYIW3DUQ4FOX) , and Seedless Red Raspberry + Calamondin (https://square.link/u/AaoxJQ2b) jams will be limited and possibly on hiatus until next winter or longer as the trees recover.

If you are local (and I know many of you are) and you want some of the above scarce flavors, don't count on seeing them at market anytime soon. Unfortunately I don't have enough jars left to make it worth bringing them down, and too many other fabulous flavors. If you want some, please place an order for pickup either here at my Jam Kitchen or at IX market this Saturday, or for delivery!

Thanks!

Best,
Daniel

FREE snowday shipping and delivery!

Order today for local delivery tomorrow! FREE nationwide shipping today only!!

Hi again!

It's really going to snow, so we're throwing caution to the wind and offering everyone free shipping (and continuing free local delivery) TODAY ONLY. All local jam + tea will be delivered tomorrow, otherwise mailed jam will get to you sometime next week.

Stock up on jam and enjoy something sweet while this crazy world continues to turn!! I finally have enough jam in stock to offer free shipping. I heard back from some dissappointed customers expecting free shipping around the holidays as usual, but I really didn't have enough inventory to make it worthwhile until now. It may be January, but any snow always makes it a feel like a holiday in Central VA. Enjoy!

Best,
Daniel

Order Jam + Tea

for pickup or FREE delivery Friday
before snow shuts everything down!!
(We won't be at IX Market this week)

Good Morning!

It's gonna snow! We're planning to miss the IX Market and OFFERING FREE DELIVERY Friday instead, to make up for 3 weeks of missing the market due to bad weather. Also our fabulous retail partners are stocked up with jam all week if you can't wait (Albemarle Baking Co, Feast, and Greenwood Gourmet Grocery have the most flavors).

I'm moving through my freezers of 2025 fruit and finding sooo many tart cherries, so uncharacteristically I have 3 Tart Cherry flavors at once (Tart Cherry + Rhubarb (https://checkout.square.site/merchant/R958MW15XQQK4/checkout/H23M5MQ7CS4F2VKM2WQET745) , Tart Cherry + Seedless Red Raspberry (https://www.accordingtodaniel.com/product/seedless-red-raspberry-tart-cherry-jam/61?cp=true&sa=true&sbp=false&q=false) , and Tart Cherry + Plum (https://checkout.square.site/merchant/R958MW15XQQK4/checkout/ZO7Z6E7V3UPDS2UO7NV5UMHV) ). I'm still loving the other plum flavors, and all the berries + citrus too. Pear + Ginger (https://square.link/u/jmuhEENI) is back for a limited time, thanks to some timely Bartlett Pears from West Virginia.

Order today (1/21) for pickup or FREE delivery on Friday (1/23). Mail order friends- rest assured your orders will leave by Friday too, and they'll be unchanged but most likely delayed by the upcoming weather.

Upcoming flavors will shift and change, as always. Specific unforseen scarcity of familiar flavors can occur this time of year, but the emergent limitations of my dwindling stockpile of frozen fruit from last year have the potential to drive me to new heights of inventiveness, so stay tuned!

Thanks for being here!

Best,
Daniel

PSA: If you haven't heard, THE FORECAST IS FOR LOTS OF SNOW!! So be safe and also be ready for school to be cancelled all week.

BIG NEWS to share!!

1. The website is freshly restocked
2. Order now for pickup or delivery
3. Raincheck on IX Market until 1/17
4. 3200 kids K-8 tried my jam yesterday

Welcome to 2026!! I've finally been able to restock after the Christmas rush! For anyone who reached out and couldn't get their favorite flavors (or any jam at all) late last year, this email is for you.

IX Farmers Market (https://marketcentral.org/) resumes tomorrow (1/10) without us, I know that site too well to naively attend in heavy rain. The plaza at IX was originally the floor of a warehouse, so it is very very flat, aside from some unsightly and ineffective french drains and a disused well that's covered with a poorly fitting wooden lid. I worked construction and landscaping there in 2004, and again for Horse and Buggy Produce in 2008, so I've seen many changes to the site.

Our current spot across from the stage has no drainage, so it's a mess with any kind of rain. Tomorrow's forecast calls for over 1/2" of rain during market, so we'll be home working on more inventory instead of standing alone in the rain, waiting for y'all to show up against your better judgement. Or, conversely, I'll be out on the road making deliveries to y'all; either way I'll be making better use of my time. If you're in the mood to take your chances and take your jam jar in hand, check Albemarle Baking Co (https://albemarlebakingco.com/) , the Greenwood Gourmet Grocery (https://greenwoodva.shop/) , and Feast! (https://www.feastvirginia.com/) for great options on a rainy day or any day at all!!

I'm getting really jazzed about the potential of my palette of wintertime jam ingredients from Central VA: frozen Red Raspberries (and a few Blackberries) from Agriberry Farm near Richmond, frozen Damson Plums from Dickie Brothers in Massie's Mill down in Nelson County, plus fresh Meyer Lemons and Calamondin Oranges (aka Calamansi) from Planet Earth Diversified in Stanardsville.

Newly returning flavors:
Red Raspberry Jam (with the seeds)
Red Raspberry + Meyer Lemon Jam (with the seeds)
Seedless Red Raspberry + Calamondin Jam
Red Raspberry + Blackberry Jam (so many seeds)
Blueberry + Meyer Lemon Jam

Classic flavors:
Damson Plum Jam
Tart Cherry + Plum Jam
Plum + Ginger Jam
Plum + Blackberry Jam
Strawberry + Rhubarb Jam
Strawberry + Thai Basil Jam
Seedless Red Raspberry + Strawberry Jam
Seedless Red Raspberry + Rhubarb Jam
Pear + Ginger Jam

BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY: Cultivate Charlottesville (https://cultivatecharlottesville.org/) , a C-ville nonprofit that handles the City Schoolyard Gardens (https://cultivatecharlottesville.org/city-schoolyard-garden/) , as well as a slew of other programs, asked us to provide 3200 portions of jam for all the public school students in town (K-8) through their Harvest of the Month program. They bring local food into schools once per month, and set up a station in the hallway by the lunch-line for kids to grab a taste. I coudn't miss the opportunity to participate, so I went into my neighborhood elementary school, where my kids attend.

I spoke on the morning announcements (after the pledge of allegiance and a moment of silence, which clocked in at a merciful 15 seconds) and made a pitch for my Damson Plum Jam. The principal Ms Fricke was very accommodating, she held the button down on the handset so that I wouldn't fumble it and mute myself. Then I came back at lunchtime for a couple hours to dish it out with the Cultivate staff, KJ, so that I could see the reactions from the kids, and teachers too! It was so much fun, although I needed a nap afterwards. I don't know how teachers do it!!

That's all for now, back to the stove to see what I can come up with next!

Best,
Daniel

We have plenty for everyone but come early for the best selection as always, but even more so this time of year. We'll be at City Market on Water St and Ix Market at IX art park from 7-1.

This'll have to be uncharacteristically brief because I'm still loading up! I'm due soon out on the blacktop to begin constructing our little tent village one last time for 2025, and I can't wait! I hope to see you there!!

Thanks all for the amazing year! Mail order jam will resume to normal as soon as possible, have no fear. If there is time and jam available, I'll offer last-minute delivery early next week... but I can't make any promises, so come on down and see us this morning!
