We are starting our loofah seeds this weekend!
Did you know loofahs grow on a plant, and not in the ocean?
Loofahs, or luffahs, are a vining type of plant related to squash that grows extremely well here (with the help of afew thorough waterings of it becomes dry outside). The fruit is edible, however the real treasure is what happens when you leave the fruit on the vine to dry.
Each vine gets extremely long, and the leaves can grow bigger than your face! They make beautiful yellow that bees, butterflies, and other pollinators go crazy over! The loofah itself looks a lot like a zucchini, and can get 2 feet long or longer.
They need a long grow season, so we start them at the beginning of February, and you will need to plant them directly in the ground after the danger of frost is past. You can plant them in pots outside as well, but you'll need to be sure to fertilize regularly and something for them to climb. I dont say this often, but I dont recommend these for indoors. You can begin harvesting your loofahs mood- late dinner if you plan on eating them, or leave them on the vine to dry and harvest around September- December.
If you'd like to reserve your seedlings, message us and we'll make sure we'll start your own plants. We plan on growing extras, but we're a small family- owned business with limited space! If you'd like to purchase seeds, we can do that as well, depending on supplies.
Please don't be caught unaware like we were, these get very large, and with enough sun and water, produce LOTS of loofahs! We had 5 successful vines that recieved between 4-6 hours of sunlight. By the time harvest was over, we managed to harvest around 50 loofahs. And that's with less than the recommended full-sun!
If you are looking for vines to grow over a pergola, large trellis, or even just up your house, these are definitely what you're looking for!
