Asian Food & Gifts of Chattanooga

Asian Food & Gifts of Chattanooga AFG has proudly served Chattanooga for 45 years as the area’s largest Asian grocery store. Surrounded by loving family, Dr. Alex passed away in 2016.

Thank you for supporting local, family-owned businesses, and we hope everyone is staying safe and healthy during these difficult times. Amidst this phase of darkness and uncertainty, we hope to spark a little joy with our story of how one family established the first and largest Asian food grocery store in Chattanooga, TN. When Dr. Alex and Miss Lynn moved to Chattanooga from Laos in 1973, they ha

d little but the clothing on their backs and a few packed bags. Like many immigrant families, they came to the US in search of better opportunities for themselves and their children. As an esteemed physician, Dr. Alex joined the surgery department at Parkridge Hospital, where he would continue to work for over 20 years. But with six young children starting school, they knew one source of income might not be enough. Upon first arriving to the states, our family experienced a great culture shock, as none of the ingredients in American grocery stores resembled the type of food we ate back home in Asia. To support her family and bring a taste of our culture to this small Tennessee town, Miss Lynn decided to open her very own Asian food grocery store in 1981. At first, her entrepreneurial effort was an uphill struggle, for not many Chattanoogans were familiar with Asian cuisine or cooking styles. But slowly and surely, Miss Lynn shared her love of cooking and the exquisite tastes of Asian food with the community. Together, they built Asian Food & Gifts from a small, single-aisle shop to the great store you know and love today. While the store has remained steadfast throughout these past 40 years, our family has overcome times of loss and change. Miss Lynn has also recently retired, and she is now able to spend more time visiting dear friends and family, including all of her 12 grandchildren. In her place you will find her son Paul, who now manages daily business operations. With his insightful business skills and the help of his wife Debbie, Paul has been able to grow AFG and further expand the scope of our inventory. If you walk into our store now, you’ll find it has grown six-times since opening day back in 1981. We now carry a vast selection of fresh produce, rice, noodles, frozen baos and dumplings, countless instant ramen, a plethora of sweet and savory snacks, and any type of Asian sauce under the sun. Our store has become more than a place to pick up groceries; it is a cultural space where we can share our heritage through traditional foods and recipes. Our products represent a wide range of Asian cuisines, including popular Chinese, Thai, Filipino, Japanese, Korean, Indonesian, and Malaysian ingredients. Miss Lynn and Paul proved that through resilience and a strong work ethic, a shared appreciation for good food can transcend cultural boundaries. Finally, the third-generation of AFG lies in Paul’s two children: Eliza and Evan. Although they are both currently pursuing undergraduate and graduate degrees at Emory University, his children continue to support the backbone of this business. Together, they introduced AFG to the new age of technology and social media. You can now find our lively presence on Instagram and Facebook, where we post regular updates, fun recipes, and exclusive sales promotions. At the end of the day, we have learned that family is what matters most, and at AFG we consider our family to be both our staff and the community we serve. With local confirmed cases of Covid-19 rising in Chattanooga, we sincerely ask that you continue to practice safe health measures like wearing a face mask and socially distancing while shopping in our store. As always, we offer free hand sanitizer and disposable gloves to wear while you shop. For vulnerable shoppers, we provide exclusive shopping hours and a parking lot pick-up service on Mondays. To the very best of our ability, we will continue to provide the most authentic ingredients at the cheapest prices. Together, we are .

AFG Songkran Festival Recap!! 🥳🇹🇭🇰🇭🇱🇦🇲🇲

THANK YOU for celebrating Theravada New Year with us! We hope you enjoyed the Buddhist prayer ceremony and traditional song and dance performances 🫶🏼🕉️🪷

We quickly learned no one was safe from the water fight, and even Mr. Paul got drenched! Safe to say the water guns were a hit, with both the kids AND adults! 🔫💦

Many thanks to our village of family & friends who cooked all the delicious Thai food we shared, from mountains of sticky rice, papaya salad, and Thai sausage, to the refreshing coconut milk sweet rice and egg custard dessert! Every single dish was homemade with love!!! 👩🏻‍🍳💕🍛🥥🌿

And if you’re craving another taste of that mouthwatering red curry chicken or pad mee, be sure to follow .licious to see where their food truck is heading next (it might even be AFG!) 🚚🥡🍜🥘

Thank you, Chattanooga, for your continued support! We’re honored to bring a taste of our culture to this sweet lil Tennessee town we now call home! Wishing you and your loved ones a joyful Theravada New Year 🐘❣️🫰🏼

AFG Songkran Festival! 🎇🐘💦

Please join us on Sunday, April 12 @ 10am for a FREE community cultural event to celebrate Songkran! Also known as Theravada (Buddhist) New Year, Songkran is the three-day new year holiday traditionally celebrated in Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, and Myanmar. 🇹🇭🇰🇭🇱🇦🇲🇲

AFG is thrilled to bring the cultural celebration of Songkran to Chattanooga, with our very first Songkran Festival! We’ll have live Thai and Laotian song and dance performances, including explanations of the meaning of each hand movement. 🎤🎹💃

We’re also honored to welcome three visiting Buddhist monks, who will share more about the holiday and provide blessings and sai sin (blessing string) bracelets for good luck and spiritual protection. 🕉️🪷✨

And if you’d like to join in on the water splashing fun (as seen in season 3 of The White Lotus!), we’ll have water blessed by the monks to wash away any bad luck and misfortunes! Water splashing is optional, and please bring a towel if you’d like to participate. ☺️💦

Thank you so much to all the Chattanooga TSA agents who have worked tirelessly without pay throughout the partial shutdown! ✈️💫

While the lines may be longer than usual, these essential workers are doing their best to get us all to our destinations safely. If you’re traveling soon, please remember to be patient and treat everyone with respect and kindness ☺️🫶🏼

As a small token of our appreciation, Mr. Paul visited the CHA airport today and donated funds and AFG gift bags for our local heroes. You can always show your thanks with kind words and a smile, but if you’d like to make a small cash or gift card donation, you can drop them off on the 2nd floor of the airport! 🧳🛂❣️

To our local TSA agents, thank you so much for your support and for keeping our community moving safely!! 🫰🏼

“AFG is more than just a store. It’s a symbol of Asian heritage and culture.” 📰🌟

student Roman “Romi” Albu stopped by recently to interview Mr. Paul for a school project, and his article is published in the CCA Bulletin! Check out Romi’s article to learn more about AFG’s story, the struggles many small businesses are currently facing, and how we overcome it every day with the support of our family and community: https://sites.google.com/hcde.org/theccabulletin/asian-food-and-gifts 👈🏼🗞️

This article is especially meaningful for us because Romi and his family have been regulars at AFG for over 10 years!!! 🥹🫶🏼 The most rewarding part of running a family business is that every day is filled with both familiar faces you’ve grown up with and new friends to welcome in. It’s truly a blessing to grow with this community for 45 years and counting, and we wouldn’t be here without your support! 🌱🐘❤️

Huge kudos to Romi for writing such a thoughtful and well-researched article! We’re so excited to see what the future holds, and we’re honored to be a small part of it 💫

Did you know there’s a special full moon tonight known as the Harvest Moon? It will appear bigger and brighter than a regular full moon, peaking at around 11:48PM ET! And it’s not a coincidence that it coincides with the Chinese Mooncake Festival. 🌕🐇✨

Traditionally, this festival was a time to celebrate the end of the great autumn harvest by feasting under the full moon. Now, we continue to honor this tradition by gathering with loved ones, giving thanks for this year’s blessings, and sharing mooncakes! 🥮🎑

And if we can stay up late enough, we’ll be reveling in the beauty of the Harvest Moon! 中秋節快樂 - Wishing you a joyous Mid-Autumn Festival from our family to yours 🏮🤗❣️
