It's been a while since we had posted. It's been about 8 weeks. But update, the 6 birds we had gotten about 8 weeks ago are now old enough for the coop. However, part of our enclosure has electric netting which is protective but the openings are still large enough for them to sneak through beyond the safety net. So we improvised for a cheap and easy fix to that. We hanged snow fencing with the electric netting. It's easily deployed and easy to take off when they're too large to fit through the holes.

Personally I don't like the look of it, but it's only a temporary thing until they are larger.

Today was the flocks weekly holiday!

LAWN CARE DAY!

While we here love the idea of the flock freely roaming every square inch of our land, I don't think our neighbors would appreciate it as much(except for one). Coupled with the high predator presence here in our neck of the woods we are forced to give them a large space to safely roam.

We here at Shady Maples help keep them from getting bored and help us cut back on the tick population by giving them the swept up grass clippings! This also keeps them happy and healthy! They will kick and scratch around in the grass looking for tasty grassy morsels along with bugs like ants, worms, grubs and best of all to us here TICKS. Having to dogs the fact we have a flock that not only gives us eggs daily we appreciate the fact they contribute by also eating up to 300 ticks per chicken per day! Like the predators, ticks are also prominent on our land as well. Just the other day we discovered a ticks on our eldest child which was successfully removed and all precautions were taken in case of Lyme was transmitted.

After that we spent some family time and am now home relaxing...Chelsea is trying her hand at making a home made cake for our youngest coming 1st birthday with our very own eggs why not!

Message us today to see if we have any eggs available.

Sparkles came home!

The speckled sussex that ran off yesterday morning managed to survive almost 36 hours on the lamb in fox and coyote heavy lands and came back to the coop today some time around 4pm! I myself am amazed at the fact she came back in one piece and we have an ecstatic little girl on our hands!

When we found her, she managed to sneak back through the electric netting openings and back inside the enclosure.

Because of the fact she had been out and about and threat of avian flu still alive, we are quarentining her in a brood tub in the garage to watch for signs. This will work two fold as it will serve as a growout as well to allow her to grow in size so she can't sneak through the fence again.

We are happy to have her return and can't wait to see her thrive with her flock mates.

*Update*

Lyndsey the master of naming the flock has named the two new speckled sussex birds glitter and shimmer. She has also named the new buff orphingtons buttercup and butterscotch. We're still working on coming up with names for the blue laced gold wyandottes.

While many eggciting things have been happening here at Shady Maples it has also been a tough week here as well.

Earlier this week, our only buff orphington chick that our daughter named cookie had succumbed to an injury from pecking order establishment and passed. This morning, our only speckled sussex had managed to squeeze through the electric fencing designed to protect them from foxes and other ground predators and has ran off. We here have searched high and low in search of the sussex Lyndsey had named sparkles in hopes of finding her alive and well to be returned to the flock. But unfortunately have came up empty handed.

Those were two of her favorite birds out of the flock to date. But last year she had also lost another favorite she named Ollie to a parasite in her intestinal tract.

We felt obligated here to do right by her and ran to town to get her a few more birds to fill the voids of her losing her favorite girls in the flock and by state standard had to purchase the minimum of 6.

So today we purchased:

2 more speckled sussex
2 more buff orphingtons
and
2 blue laced gold wyandottes

The successful growth and integration of these birds in 8 to 10 weeks will bring our current flock total to 34.

Stay tuned in the coming weeks to see updated photos of them as they grow!

Being family oriented here is one of our big values at Shady Maples and felt it was right to do this for our little girl so she has a bird or two to look forward to seeing.

*edit* We added photos of the three breeds to show you what they will(or close to it. Plumage varies from bird to bird within breed almost like a fingerprint) look like when they are fully grown. **will be in comments**

The big news is...

We took in 6 more birds today!

Our friend over at Huckleberrys Homestead got ahold of us and informed us they needed an emergency rehoming of their birds they had a breach in security and a fox had just about decimated their flock and these girls were pretty much left to the flock. We were happy to help out another person in need in times of stress.

These birds have been safely caught and transported then acquainted with their new flock mates over the course of the day and now released scratching around and getting along well.

The additions to the flock are:
3 cream legbars
1 black copper maran

And my favorite

2 ayem cemani which are a rare bird for the US.

In the coming days we here at Shady Maples intend on saving eggs produced from these girls to be kept off to the side to give back to Huckleberrys Homestead so they can incubate, raise and restart their flock.

Stay tuned everyone!

We here at Shady Maples have some big news!

05/17/2022

Earlier this year at Shady Maples we frost seeded right around the time the snow had melted. Then we had a heavy wet snow hit us that only lasted a few days. I'm that time, our mix of cereal rye, medium red clover and buckwheat(don't believe the buckwheat survived the temps) sprouted and began to take root. During the beginning stages of growth, poultry will kill off any chance of it surviving. Well today was the day to let them loose! With the addition of some new birds to the flock, keeping them contained was proving to be hard on the new girls as the bullying was fierce.

Now that the senior birds have a large space to scratch and graze it will take the seniors eyes off the new girls for a while in hopes of them falling into the fold a tad easier.

Another risk is the current avian flu that is sweeping across the country. That was another reason to keeping them confined to a smaller space than longer than we care for. Luckily there are only 2 confirmed cases in our county(at last checked) and they were in migratory game waterfowl found deceased. There are zero recorded cases in song birds anywhere in NYS which is what would frequent their space.

Happy birds make better tasting eggs! Message us today!

So progress at Shady Maples! Our personal meat turkeys have been added to the flock to make way in what we call our "introductory cage" for the 6 new layer additions to our egg laying flock!

The turkeys had spent the last 4 days in view but separated from the flock for safety reasons. The pecking order can get quite violent at times so these tight quarter transitions are needed at times to safely add new members to the flock. Unfortunately due to their size there time was short but seem to be mixing well with the flock.

General rule of thumb is 1 to 2 weeks in communal confinement like this for the birds to learn of each other and then go from there(prolonged if needed). But now it's the 6 new layers turns.

Due to threat of the avian flu, our flock is still confined to their winter enclosure to minimize the threat of flock infection. But we hope to be able to let them loose to their entire graze space in the next couple weeks.

Don't forget to like and share and message us about our freshly laid butt nuggets!

Just a girl and her chickens. Behind the scenes here at shady maples we currently have our personal turkeys being introunced to the flock. Here tonight they should be removed from their introductory segregation cage and be able to move around with the flock(will be removed from segregation tonight after sun goes down) and tomorrow the cage will be cleaned for the new layers can be introduced to the flock tomorrow and will remain in the safety of visible segregation for about a week til the newbies get to know the seniors.

Update:

These are 6 of the 9 birds posted a few weeks ago. These will be added to our flock to help keep up with demand of our fresh eggs!

These girls are currently approximately 3 weeks and 5 days old. Based on feathering and proximity of time from hatch, ship then purchase its hard to approximate age to exact unless ordered straight from the hatchery. Under each photo will be the breed that they are but no names have been set in stone yet as our local naming guru (miss Lyndsey Mae) hasn't decided on exact names yet.

All of these girls will start laying between 16 and 24 weeks of age and all will lay brown eggs except one the speckled sussex which lays a cream like egg.

Stay tuned for more updated photos as they get older!
