Koch's Garden

Koch's Garden Koch's Garden is a private garden newly relocated to Chelan, WA. I will focus on fresh herbs, vegetable in season, and possibly micro-greens.

My hope is to be productive enough to begin selling at Farmers Markets and to restaurants in 2021.

2022 here we come! I've had my seed catalogs sitting around for a while and done some planning on the computer. It may be June before all this snow is gone off the road to the garden!

I'm so encouraged by the amount of produce I got from the garden last year that I hope to possibly attend some Farmers Markets and sell to my neighbors this year. I got 80+ pounds of Butternut Squash!! Loads of tomatoes for canning/freezing (Spaghetti sauce, salsa, tomato juice and sauce, etc.); still eating onions; green beans in the freezer; plenty of cucumbers & zucchini; a couple of delightful watermelons and several pumpkins; and lots of peppers. The heat almost did me in . . . and the tomatoes suffered (blossom end rot) as I couldn't keep up with their water needs in that sandy soil.

This year I hope to get drip irrigation in and finish prepping the last 3 beds. I'll be experimenting with trellising cukes and training tomatoes to a single leader. More fun to come!

Long time, no posts! We have had such a lovely spring! And that has allowed me to get a lot done at the garden. The garden shed has been leveled up and the lean-to built on the back -- YAY!

Thanks to my wonderful, kind and generous neighbor the last 3 beds have been loosened with the backhoe. It looked like starting from scratch at first, but I've w**ded and fertilized most of the beds now. Two loads of horse manure hauled - whew! The fencing is complete and the last gate in place just yesterday.

Some plants moved from the greenhouse to the garden and the fence is working . . . so far. I'm also trying a rodent repeller (see photo). I put out a few "sacrificial" plants to see if they survived deer, marmots and chipmunks. It's been 4 days and everything is still there -- and has been added to: Tomatoes, onions, collard greens, peppers, cucumbers and pumpkins are looking pretty good. The onion transplants seem a little stressed so I think they will appreciate the cloud cover today.

Just when I start to wonder if all the work is worth it, I get a little reward -- yesterday it was discovering the Black Caps along the road are ready for snacking on. This always makes me happy!

It has been a rough garden year - plumbing from the well was broken so I hauled water up to the garden in coolers and hand watered. Thankfully that was dug up and repaired on 8/18. Finally plenty of water for the plants! And a lot less work for me. I spent days cutting knapp w**d on the road, and many hours picking rocks in the garden area. It feels like a minor miracle that anything is growing! A little horse manure and a good dose of fish fertilizer and everything is green and lush. The extra water brought on a flush of blossoms and the bees found their way there so . . . Lots of zucchini of course, a couple of pumpkins, some cherry tomatoes and a handful of green beans every day. The onions didn't do well and most of the peppers got chewed off at the base (so did some of the beans). I put a couple pepper plants in a big pot and covered it with chicken wire. That worked and they are huge and flowering.

When things cool off, I'll get to finishing the deer fence, prep some more beds for next year, and probably bring in more manure. Critters are still a worry -- the deer eat anything that pokes out of the chicken wire, the marmots will likely return, and the chipmunk and mice will be waiting with their little knives and forks!

Things are fine right now and I'm still wondering how any of it grew in that sand and rock pile I call a garden. And, oh yes, there is the view . .

It has been a while since I posted anything -- but things have been slow so you haven't missed anything! To update: The fence is partially up (thanks to a good friend) and the ground (which is rock-hard after all the heavy equipment doing well work and plumbing) has been loosened up (thanks to a good neighbor!). After MUCH rock picking, one load of horse manure is on the ground (thanks to a co-worker) -- that's just a start. I've got a few things started in the greenhouse down by the cabin. One remaining problem is that I am housing a couple of marmots -- probably more than a couple by now! They will just mow down anything I plant, so I'm working on some fencing/deterrent strategies. If you have any bright and humane solutions please pass them this way. Stay tuned -- there is always more to come.

Small steps or giant leaps to get the garden ready for next year. Well pump is in (water!), ground is level. Now to fencing and rock-picking. I am considering changing the name to something more appropriate: Granite Farms.

New garden site is FINALLY getting prepared -- still have to get the generator & pump, fencing, and lots of manure, etc. to get the soil in shape. All hope for a beautiful new garden next year!

Happy New Year everyone! This is a big snow year-- to say the least! Koch's Garden is on hold for a while. Hope you all are enjoying an old fashioned winter and coping with the cold and snow. It will be over soon and I'll be back outside digging in the dirt. I'd LOVE to be digging in the dirt at the new Manson site but first I must sell this Pateros house. Your help with promoting this lovely home is greatly appreciated!

It's been a while since I posted! Pretty busy summer -- again with the fires! I didn't grow much this summer as the HOUSE IS FOR SALE!!! but I still had herbs at Bear Foods in Chelan. As soon as this house sells, I'll begin working on the move to Manson. It will be good to be nearer to old friends -- but I'll miss the friends I've made here in Pateros. Meanwhile, HOUSE FOR SALE is a priority -- it is listed with Century 21 (Nanno VanEysinga) so you can see lots of photos on the MLS site (Listing #856489). It's a lovely home with a nice organic garden area. Price at $238,500. If you or anyone you know might be interested, please check out the listing -- or give me a call -- or message me -- or call a realtor -- or any other option for making contact! Many thanks and Merry Christmas to all!

A couple days ago I wandered out to the garden to have a look around . . . found shelling peas to munch on and golden raspberries here and there. Delicious breakfast. It made me wonder why some people don't have a garden or grow even a little something!
