Lots of overwhelming things this year, but it’s a good year. I wasn’t as good as I thought I could be at keeping track of my flock and business. I felt very “chaos gardening” vibe 😂

I’m welcoming the coming winter as hopefully a time of rest and reset for us. My grow outs are looking good enough to decide on and some of my older hens are ready to move on from their career.

I still love my breakfast buffet colors 💞

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again…

If hatching dark eggs and breeding the resulting offspring together was a guaranteed way to get more dark eggs, we’d all have 7s, 8s, and 9s and they’d no longer be what everyone is searching for.

Breeders sell super dark eggs and we’re all still looking for them. Breeders sell purple-bloomed eggs and we’re all still looking for them.

If these things were easy to replicate, they’d be EVERYWHERE. But they’re not easy to replicate.

I have kept this line spectacularly in**ed in an attempt to first stabilize and then reverse-engineer dark brown pigment genetics. And LOOK at how much variation I still get.

I produce a higher percent of females that lay dark eggs every year, but I still get absolute culls.

Do I hope to figure it out in my lifetime? Yep. Am I optimistic that I will? Not today, honestly. Maybe try asking me next year 😆

I nearly started crying when I found these stunning Eggshellent Egger pullet eggs 😭😍🙌👌 the slightest olive tinge to these beautifully dark and speckled nuggets. Oh my stars!! 🌟 my husband asked me to pair down the flock but I just can’t miss out on this stuff 😅 it’s too special!!!
