Greetings once again from Shawnee Mound Orchard! Blueberries are now getting ripe. I’d like to continue as I’ve done in the past: Please give me a call at 660-885-5918 (this is a landline) and we’ll schedule a good time for you to come and pick. If no answer, please leave a message and I’ll call you back. The price this year will be $3.50 a pound. As for peaches, a very hard spring freeze eliminated this year’s crop. Also eliminated were plums and cherries. A hail storm beat up the apples. We’ll have to wait and see how they develop. Anyone want to buy an orchard!? lol
Hope to hear from all of you.
Ron

We have a surplus of cucumbers. Debra’s done putting up pickles, but the plants are still producing. I hate to see good food go to waste and the chickens can’t eat them fast enough, so before I remove most of the vines I’m checking if anyone would like some. They don’t have to be made into pickles. The larger ones make good slicers. If you’re interested, give me a call (660-885-5918) and I’ll try to get the sizes you’d like. Yes, they’re free. Better act fast! Cucumbers don’t like extreme heat.
Speaking of free, there are a few blueberries scattered throughout the bushes. If you would like to collect a bowl full of fresh berries, you are welcome to them. Otherwise, the birds will continue their feast. We had a record harvest this year. Thanks to all of you!

We still have blueberries! Although a little slower to pick, many people, including me, think they are more flavorful. Give us a call (660-885-5918 – land line, no texts) to make sure we’re open and berries are available. Only $3.00 per pound, u-pick. Mornings and evenings are a great time to be outside. Hope to see you.

From time to time, someone will ask if we sell already picked berries. Our response is usually no, due to the fact we pick a lot for ourselves and we have so much work to do to keep up with the orchard.

However, we have a neighbor who has offered to pick berries for others. She charges $4/lb,, which means the berries would cost you a total of $7/lb. This is tedious, hot work and I know other orchards are charging that, or very close to that, for pick-your-own. Our berries are beautiful this year; we don't spray with anything; they are only touched by mother nature and whoever picks them.

If interested, call us at 660-885-5918 and we'll schedule with Amy to pick them for you.

Debra

Greetings!
Blueberries are finally ready to pick. Cool, cloudy weather has been relished by the blueberry plants, but the berries have been slow to ripen. But wait no longer! Get on the phone and dial (Does anyone really dial anymore?) 660-885-5918. Please leave a message if no one answers. Our hours are irregular (like our lives) and we sometimes run out of berries. It seems to work best if we schedule your arrival. Thanks to our small (in numbers) staff and low overhead, we’re keeping our price at $3.00 a pound. I know that some places charge twice that. Consider this my way of thanking you for being kind and respectful when you visit.
Hope to see all of you.
Ron

Greetings everyone!
All the plants are enjoying spring rains and our ponds are particularly thankful for the 5” gully-washer. We now have a good reserve for irrigating this summer. The fall drought was hard on the blueberry bushes, but we’re still hoping to get some good berries – probably starting around the end of May. I guess we’ll be waiting until next year for peaches. Fall drought, 14 below zero, and a late spring freeze was more than our trees could stand. I’m beginning to wonder why I’m spending so much time and effort pruning them every year. Aught to just let them grow so they would at least provide some shade.

If you would like some fresh asparagus, please give me a call (660-885-5918). $2.50 per pound. Someone asked about freezing asparagus. Well for me, freezing asparagus is super easy. Spread it out on shallow pan (No, I don’t wash it. Just pick out wood chips, grass, etc. and watch the bottom of spears for mud, etc.. When I pick I try to keep it clean.). Freeze overnight. Put in gallon zip-lock bag – which will hold about 2 ½ lbs. Then whenever you want, just grab a handful. Keep the rest frozen. I do the same thing with blueberries.

We have more apples! Red Fuji at $5 per 10 lb. bag and Grand Gala at $8 per 10 lb. bag. Please give us a call at 660-885-5918 and we’ll put your name on a bag(s). This is a land-line so texting will be useless. Sorry.
Thank you, everyone, for supporting our little orchard. Looking forward to next year when we’ll hopefully be more in sync with mother nature.
